Oil filter help

On my build I am using a zetec silver top and the oil filter is right in the middle of the path where my steering column needs to run. If i were to use a smaller oil filter it would solve the problem.

Would i change oil pressures etc by doing this? Am I likely to damage the engine?

cheers,

Common problem and using a smaller filter is fine. On both the Blacktop fitted now and the Silvertop that was in the car before it I use a Halfords 264. Its off a Ka and other Fords and gives just enough clearance on my car.

There are smaller Renault filters that are popular fitment but there is a potential engine wrecking issue. Ford still use an imperial thread on their filters and the early Renaults used the same imperial thread. Later Renaults changed to a metric thread and the filters are an identical size and to confuse matters some early 5's used both imperial and metric during the production run. Fit the metric filter to an imperial thread and it will appear to tighten OK but once under pressure there is a good chance it will come off and cost you an engine, seen it happen a few times at track days.

None of our local factors (including one that claims to specialise in classic parts) sells Renault filters with the imperial thread any more. You can get them off the interweb and no doubt some one will be along with the Fram part number shortly but IMHO if you can get the Halfords 264 in why bother, they are available everywhere, are cheap and have the correct thread.

Thanks Paul. Really wasn't looking forward to having to move the column!

As above...

I had a good look around for a decent filter for my Zetec. All the usual suspects were just that - suspect eg using a Renault 5 filter which is M20 on a 3/4" ford oil filter thread - no thanks. I ended up using a short but fat filter from a Ford XR4x4 V6 / Cossie 2WD. Ford oil filter code EFL 298.
