I'll start with the obvious one....flat battery?

Mine's a bit iffy in that whan the car is warm it will often not engage for a couple of goes. It was suggested to me that the alignment might be slightly out though I've never tried to fix it.

Maybe try loosening the bolts a touch and try it then?

is it just a click, or is trying more than once on the key?

does sound like an earth issue if the battery is in good nick.

As above, ensure your engine earth strap is good, and the battery to chassis earth is equally so.

Earth strap would be my first port of call

battery -> chassis & chassis to engine/gearbox.

Took the starter off again to try it and guess what it only clicked, well the starter came out but didn't spin, kept on trying it
and eventually it spun then it didn't again,,, so looks like with it sticking so much its gonna after be a new starter.?

thanks for all your quick replies chaps

You might consider disassembling the poor thing and cleaning /lubing it?

Had a stater on mine which did that - turned out half the windings were FUBAR which accounted why sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't.
Is there no local Dynamo/Starter rebuild company who can test it for you?
Other than that if you can turn it manually around a few different points then re-try connecting it up it might confirm if that's the case.
HTH.

is it a silvertop Zetec if so have you modified the sump to allow the starter to sit correctly if the mod isnt done the starter sits at an angle causing stress on it thefore it take to much power to turn the starter

Has similar on my old silvertop zetec westy, Stripped the starter and cleaned it all up and lubed where req'd and it worked fine after that.

Doesn't sound like you've got much to loose, so it's gotta be worth a try ?
