VIN plate location
Morning folks,
I've been looking at this thread linky.
But I have a slightly different question so I thought it would be best to start a new thread.
I know the plate has to be on the offside (driver's side) but does it have to be in the engine bay?
Could I put it on the cross bar just in front of the driver's seat?
Or maybe just to the right of the drivers leg?
Would there be an issue with it being visible to a passer by?

No worries with people seeing it as a lot of modern cars seem to have the vin displayed at the bottom of the windscreen.
For the IVA man I don't know.

It can be anywhere, providing it complies with below.
1.
The vehicle must be fitted with a manufacturer’s plate, in a conspicuous and readily accessible position.
Its only the stamped/engraved VIN on the chassis that MUST be on the offside.

The VIN plate doesn't have to be stamped, it can be printed as long as "it has been treated in such a way that it is most unlikely that
essential information would be obliterated or defaced during the normal life of the vehicle."
I have printed mine on self adhesive vinyl and stuck a layer of clear vinyl over it.

There is also a note for the plate 'Note 3: 'Securely attached' means screwed, bolted, riveted or otherwise fixed such that it is
not likely to become displaced during the life of the vehicle.
I would expect that some fussy testers may consider a sticker could easily be displaced over the life of a vehicle.

I think I got my terminology wrong,
Where a said "vin plate" in the original post, read "vin stamped on chassis".

The stamped/etched VIN could be anywhere also (but on the offside), but I personally wouldnt want mine exposed, any reason why you dont want it under
the bonnet?

I don't have much space along the offside on the top rail, just looking at alternatives....

It doesnt have to be on the top rail, as long as it can be read theres no reason it couldnt be on the bottom rail, or any part of the chassis, as long
as its not obscured by engine mounts, exhaust manifiolds, starters, etc.

We had trouble stamping our vin no direct to the chassis
it was just denting the chassis & not legible
I contacted Vosa via email ,their reply was to stamp it on a steel plate
& weld it all the way round onto the chassis drivers side
near the bulkhead.
Passed IVA no probs ,had the email from Vosa in case.

Do you need a manufacturers plate? I have a chassis number from the dvla but dont have a plate? Will this be an issue for the iva test?

Yes you need a plate with the VIN and other detail on it, as well as the VIN No. stamped or etched to the chassis.

Sorry just read 40 inches post regarding printing the plate then protecting it. Just need to know what's required on the plate.
