Steering Wheel height adjustment - Striker

During the winter I replaced the seating with new cushion and covering as I thought the old units were abit thin and flat.

But now as I'm tall. The steering wheel is tight under the wheel with my knee's to drive for any distance and safetly, although the new padding is only 15/20mm thicker pushing me forward and upwards.

Has anyone with a Striker or similar, modified the fixtures of the column etc to alter the Steering wheel height to give me more room with my knee's under the wheel. Granted the hole in the dash will need elongating upwards.

Is it a sierra column?

Not sure to be honest, the car was already built when purchased.

But its that type of column with a short knuckled shaft between the rack and column.

That could be any tbh. If it is Sierra you could try and retrofit a sierra adjustable column. Or you could just look at seeing if there is a way to space or shim any existing mount. Take some pics and it might make it easier to suggest routes.

Not sure whether a Phoenix and Striker are the same in this regard, but....

On my Phoenix there is a steering column mount that is at the back end of the pedal box. If you lower that mount then the steering wheel will be angled up by a similar amount. Quite easy to lower as it is just a hole in a plate. Some nice bearings that suit have been described on this site before (sorry I haven't supplied the relevant thread link).

My Striker has a MKII Escort column which I am in the process of replacing as the old bearings are shot to pieces. As I have a welded on steering wheel adapter I can't replace the worn bearings

To stop the problem happening again I have done away with the Escort outer column tube and want to use pillow block bearings instead...the added benefit is that these can easily be lifted on small blocks if I want to change the steering wheel position.

I was recommended on here the services of www.simplybearings.co.uk but so far they have only been able to offer me a bearing that is 2-3mm bigger than I need! I have not found any other options so will be purchasing these bigger pillow block bearings and getting a local machine shop to turn up a simple spacer to take up the difference.

there should be some adjustments available, depends on the brackets type of column etc fitted. you might want to change the front bearing to the one discussed here. it should give you a bit more angle than the standard sierra rubber/plastic bush setup
