Trying to be helpful (Ebay advert)

So I came across this advert;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331089120695

And since I have a soft spot for big engined Toledo's I thought I'd contact the seller to let him know that his advert is wrong. It's currently listed as a V5 2.8, and as most VW fans will know, there wasn't a V5 2.8. It was either a 2.3 V5, or a 2.8 V6. As I know the cars inside out, I could even recognise the variant of V5 from the pictures, it's the older one with the lower power output.

So I got a snotty reply saying that he was advertising it off the logbook, and that all the details matched. And of course, we all know how good a job the DVLA do don't we? Turns out a quick check on the DVLA site also shows it's a 2.8.

Was I wrong to try and assist? Some poor soul is going to buy that, and not be able to insure it under a standard policy because of the supposed non standard engine. It did occur to me that it could be bored out, but I don't think a V5 would cope with that sort of capacity increase.

Buyer beware...

I did a similar thing on a CRV sale. It was a 2.2 diesel advertising it as recently had a cambelt replacement. As they don't have one, either the seller is lying, clueless or it's a fraud - either way keep clear.

Nothing wrong with Letting them know. The snotty reply just suggests they are hiding something

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Does seem like a DVLA screw up as I don't think the V6 was ever an option on the Toledo?

The seller is obviously a car trader so really should know better, VAG never made a 2.8L V5.

Some people just can't be told. I knew one chap who insisted his 316 BMW was a V6, EVEN when I opened the bonnet and showed him 4 spark plugs, NO it was STILL a V6.

I remember years ago when the audi TT first come out.

A want to be petrol head friend of mine tried to tell me they were Twin Turbo hence the TT name.

I told him he was stupid. He replied with " go on then, what else can TT mean?"

Slightly OT but still makes me laugh.

That's what I thought, a private seller may not know any different but a trader should realise something is wrong with the paperwork.

You have hit the nail on the head, it should have been called an Audi OT for One Turbo.

After his arsey reply I had quite a few messages with the dick selling the car as I was bored and found it hilarious.

During our little chat I was told to 'go get a girlfriend' yep got one ta.

'Go get a job' yep got one of them too

'What the f**k do you know about the motor trade?!' Evidently more than you!

He then went on to tell me he's not just a car salesman but actually the owner of several businesses and he has the task of appointing MD's etc, in reply I asked what was the owner of such a massive empire with several underlings doing answering eBay messages on a Sunday about a 500 quid car????

He then told me to come down and we'd take it outside to sort this out

Brilliant I'd actually quite like to meet the muppet now

Some may consider reporting them to eBay for masquerading as a private seller when their advert clearly proves they are in fact a trader, the disclaimer in the advert would not hold up in law regarding trade sale if sold to a member of the public.

Funny you should say that, I did tell him he wasn't a particularly clever individual, because, if he was he wouldn't have mentioned he was a trader. All he kept saying was the logbook was correct and that's all he was obliged to describe correctly

like I said not a very bright individual

I thought that about pretending to be a private trader.

Someone should have put in bids then after the auction said the goods weren't as described (As clearly they aren't if people here are right about the engine never being a factory option and the car not being described as modified.
