OT: keep getting strange calls
Hi everyone,
I know this has been mentioned before, but, I keep getting calls about "that car accident you had two years ago".
I have never had a car accident. Never had a claim, never had a claim for PPI etc etc.
I am always polite and ask to be removed for their list but after a bad day at work this guy got all the fruity language I know.
I felt better about myself for a while until he rang back. Explaining that I hadn't been very polite to him etc etc. I then asked if I could be
removed from his system only for him to revert back to script about my 'accident'. I'm afraid he got told to 'Geoff off'
(or simliar). He then tried ringing back three or four times. The phone has now finally stopped ringing.
What do these people want? Even if I had had an accident what are they going to do? Do they want information (they already know my name and phone
number (mobile) ) or are they going to try and sue on my behalf?
I am just very frustrated, but more so by him calling back several times. No company info, no phone number just hassle

Look at is free entertainment, I take quite a bit of pleasure in winding them up. Some of them you can get a good 5 mins out of before they get fed
up and put the phone down. If you feel like having a blow off and being rude then that's OK to as far as I'm concerned...they
shouldn't call if they're easily offended.

what I find a bit odd, is that they rang back ? a few times
just that alone would worry me
I don't even give them any message or rude words now, just hang up, or if I have time etc just say "hang on" put the phone down on
the desk/worktop whatever, and walk away, an let them assume I will come back and at some point they must hang up
as they have got bored

Me: Ask away mate...
Can you tell me your pin number?
Me: Can you tell me why you with held your number?
Err, can you tell me your pin number please?
Me: No I cant unfortunately cause I dont want to take part in your f@*%$£ing scam..
Its not a scam I'm calling from Barclays about your account.
Me: Well phone the branch and tell them about it and I'll pop in and see what its about...
And, it went on like this, I asked him a number of times why he withheld his number and simply got no answer..
In the end he gave up, and said have a good day sir, bye.
Be as rude as you like, after all he started it by calling uninvited..

Just to add, I sometimes counter the opening line by asking if they are aware of the Telephone Preference Service.
I normally get an apologetic reply saying sorry, I'll remove you from our mailing system...

Endless...
Marketing surveys, accident explorations 'that accident....', PPI, insurance, bank scams, timeshares, utility companies, false delivery
agents. Every form of low life scum (even political parties), all hours.
TPS is essentially useless. Best way is stop most is to simply ignore all 'withheld' and 'unavailable' numbers, and/or pulling
the phone off line if you want some peace in the evenings. Ignoring them has eventually worked for most.
Asking them to stop, go away, remove your number, etc., has had no success. Some will say 'yes, sorry...' and then ring back an hour
later. Abuse makes me feel better, when I get the urge, but achieves nothing.
I inadvertently picked up a utility caller earlier, went something like....
'silence'
'is Mr (random name) in?.
'who are you?'
'am I taking to Mr (random name)?'
'who are you'?'
'I'm from.....'
etc...
Classic lines:
'Who supplies your Gas?'
'Heinz'
....

I get loads of these calls and always have sport with them. I often answer the phone as a `butler` and tell them that the homeowner is out shooting on
the estate.
Q - When`s the best time to catch him in they say?
me - Usually any time after 10pm.
Q - But we don`t work that late
me - Oh well!
I`ve also put them `on hold` before now whilst I`ve gone to fetch `the homeowner`. Leave them hanging on the line for ages!

I used to get loads of these calls, the worst being the automated ones where you get a computer voice so you can't even tell them where to go or
the ones from Indian call centres.
Best thing I ever bought was a new house phone, I got a Siemens Gigaset something or other, can't remember the exact model but it has a feature
to allocate a silent ringtone to withheld numbers.
What happens now is you get your cold call but you don't answer it because you can't hear it ringing, after a few days trying because it
rings out and nobody ever answers they put you down as a dead end and take you off their calling lists where if you answer it they will keep calling
or pass it on to more cold calling outfits.
Since doing this my cold calls are now virtually zero, I still get one every couple of weeks but they have to show their phone number so at least I
know who to complain about if I have to.

Doesn't that rely on caller ID? A lot of these places block their numbers.
Yesterday at work someone from a solar energy company made the mistake of cold calling my boss, who is a practical joker. He put the call on speaker
and made out to be very interested, asked lots of really stupid questions (e.g. is it ok to paint the panels, I don't like the blue colour?).
After telling them that he was keen to sign up they asked for his address and he told them he lived in a motorhome with no fixed abode . The poor
lass he was talking to was very apologetic to my apparently crestfallen boss when she said they couldn't deal with a motorhome.
