I am a complete cheapskate and used the flat plate mount off the top of the point of sale box,.. tried two ways,. velcro on the underside, and stuck to the carpet on the inside,.. not a great view, but allowed me to listen to the engine ok, and the second way was by cutting slots in it, and tie-wrapping it to the roll cage, that worked well too. Saved money over a cage mount too,...

if you want I can take a picture,..

the engine noise is perfectly audible with the closed back mount, not a clue how to run a cable to it when it is in it's protective case,. sorry

I use a Manfrotto clamp and GoPro tripod adaptor
It'll do roll bars and any other clamp point

I have a GoPro Hero 2 so it has a direct mic input which I connect to this Mic:

Mic

you can hear it here:

The mic is behind the dash in the passenger footwell and it picks up the engine noise pretty well whilst being out of the wind.

At the moment I'm using the skeleton front case and solid back but plan to drill the correct sized holes into a solid case so i can connect the mic and charger without having to worry about rain getting in too easily.

My preference for position is based on being able to see as much as possible from one location so I have it behind me and able to see my dash and inputs as well as the rear view via my mirror.

If you have a Hero 3 you will need to look at some soft of adapter that allows you to connect a Mic.

The biggest annoyance with this setup is that the mic has it's own battery power and on off switch that you have to remember. At the moment I put fresh batteries(Amazon bulk buy) in for each trackday but at some point i'll work out how long it lasts.

Hope this helps

Chris

Oh and power wise I installed a usb power socket like this:

Waterproof 12V to 5V Motorcycle USB Socket. Power Adapter. Mobile Phone Charger

then ran a long USB lead to my GoPro to keep it constantly charged. It works really well and also gives you the options of charging you phone of sat nav for example.
