Post No.1. Please be gentle with me.. Zetec/MT75 Q?

I bought and old MK Indy that b
must be 9/10 years old but never been finished.

It is all Sierra running gear complete with the dreaded 8v DOHC mated to an MT75 gearbox.

THE QUESTION.

The question is does a Black top 2.0 Zetec mate up to the gearbox that mates up to the Sierra/Granada DOHC lump?

Yes or no?

Yes yes I done searches but often it gets very confusing ( I am easily confused!)

Which flywheel, 1.8 Zetec??

The plan is to go bike carbs and megajolt (already purchased)

Then once I have got bored with that power to weight ratio I plan to go Zetec supercharged this bike throttle bodies with a decent ECU.

All this RWD Bellhousing talk is Fairly new to me as I come from the FWD A series world having run turbocharged Minis and successfully raced MG Metro turbos.

All Ford gearboxes fit all Ford inline 4 engines from Crossflow to Zetec
Whilst the gearbox is the same there are V6 variants that have longer input shaft and different bellhousing bolt patterns for V engines from Essex to Cologne

yep - you need a new release bearing (CT133 i think, someone will confirm) , and spigot bearing but otherwise will bolt up. Make sure to leave the VR sensor in the engine block, as you can use this with your MJ.

Not all bolt holes are needed though, 5 or 6 if i remember, so you'll want to make a sandwich plate to fill the gaps created by the different size engine blocks.

VR sensor is the crank sensor that triggers the timing yes?

If you go for the balck top you'll need to pass the more stringent BETS emmision test at IVA. That requires a 'cat and isn't easy to get through with carbs... not impossible, but not easy. You might be better of sticking with the DOHC if it's pre Sept '95 (so no 'cat) for IVA and upgrade the engine later. Down side of that is the exhaust changes sides on DOHC/Zetecs.

Sorry but you are wrong, The exhaust is on the same side.

Pinto is opposite, DOHC & Zetec are the same.

Duratec is same as Pinto.

Probably worth asking - have you bought the blacktop yet?

Might be worth getting a pre 94 (i think) Silvertop as the emissions regs are less stringent for IVA.

as above swapping to the blacktop zetec before the IVA will be making a rod for your own back

the cheapest way forward avoiding the need for a CAT will be to stick with the DOHC for now
(you could fit the bike carb's and megajolt to it if you liked)


that way even if you swap to zetec later you'll still only need to pass the pre-CAT test levels at your MOT's
(unless you get a Q plate, then you'll only need to pass the pre-73 'visual smoke' test )

X-flow, DOHC, CVH and Zetec E are all the same side

its the Pinto, Duratec HE and Zetec SE (1.25 to 1.7) that are the other way round

you will need a release bearing like this with a spacer with an mt75http://parts-shop.westfield-sportscars.co.uk/engine-drivetrain-exhaust?product_id=195 type box 9 uses ct133 i think dont forget spigot bearing in the end of the crank

Starting from the beginning.

Yes you can use a Black top on a Mt75.
There are ups and downs to the black top but the emissions for iva wouldn't bother me. Only the pre Aug 1995 silver tops will have the easier test so September 95 > 99 silver tops will have to do the same test as the black top.

Flywheel, You can use the 1.8 or the 2.0.

Clutch to match the above, make sure the intended vehicle ran the mtx75 as lots of 1.8's didn't.

Thrust bearing, Two options here.

Option A) A 20mm spacer on the thrust bearing. Westfield sell one but its nearly £90.

Option B) move the clutch fork pivot. You can do this with a nut and bolt making it adjustable or you can buy a pin from Gbs through Kitspares for £12 (if they have any in stock).

You could have a zetec fully fuelled and sparked and ready to meet Iva for less than the cost of a set of Carbs using the zetec ecu. This will start you at around 136~150bhp depending on exhaust ect.

Upgrade it latter with the carbs or throttle bodies for an extra 15~20bhp

Upgrade again with cams and headwork and a few more bits for 200bhp+.

I'll stick to the rest of the argument though as it's one less reason not to do it.

Thanks for all the useful info.

No reals plans to IVA MK just yet. I own a nice 4 wheel trailer and plan to do some track days.

Concentrating on getting the weight down.. IE I have saved 4.5 kg per corner going from 15s to 13in wheels etc etc..

October and it will be on track!
