Chassis for BMW M52 2.8

Hello everyone,

I have been making plans on building a car using a BMW M52 2.8L engine (190 bhp /280nm torque).


Thing is I am not sure about which chassis to go for -either Haynese version or the McSorely +442.

Perhaps someone could give me some advice on this one or have some CAD drawings of this M52 engine so I could test the fitment in computer.

Pretty sure Peter at GKD will still do you a chassis if you ask nicely.

As I live overseas would not probably ship the chassis here. Also, half the reason why I am considering this project is the fact that I can do it myself

I have been looking around and it seems to me too that it would fit in the Haynes chassis.

If anyone has any more pointers what look out for using an M52 in Haynes chassis I would be very thankful.

There's a couple of people doing M52's in a Haynes chassis. If you move the tube across the top of the drive tunnel back a bit, it'll go far enough back.

I'm using the BMW engine with a Haynes Roadster Chassis, this is what I have done:

Lol, I may have copied slightly but I wish I had copied exactly! Would recommend anyone to do it your way, you then don't have to alter the top of the footwell chassis plates so much

Hello,

I have been slowly gathering information for my build and now I am about to get it going. Just need to order the steel.

Now I have two decisions to make:

should I use steel with yield strength of 370 MPa
Form 370 - http://www.ruukki.com/Steel/Precision-tubes/Square-precision-tubes/Form-220-and-370-square

OR

steel with yield strength of 400 MPa
Form 500 - http://www.ruukki.com/Steel/Precision-tubes/Square-precision-tubes/Form-500-square

They offer tubes with even higher strengths, but I am afraid they might be too brittle or something like that.




The second decision to make is the wall thickness. I can get these pipes in both 1.5 and 2mm. Considering the somewhat bulky 2.8L BMW engine, I am thinking about 2mm. Then again I would always prefer a lighter car if I could convince myelf there won`t be any issues material cracking etc.


Please share you thoughts and educated guesses

When i built mine it was based on Champions book but i wanted to fit Rover V8 so i made the chassis 4" wider and also made my own IRS as no plans at the time. I used 1.6mm shs and it was fine.

Just think about what you are doing and plan ahead. And don't get all technical, that's why things fail.

I'd go for 1.5mm wall and the lower strength steel - the other one has some alloying elements which may effect how easy it is to weld and the strength of the welds - plus there's only 30MPa in it so it's not worth it in my opinion!
