Making a new purchase SORN, how do I do it?

I seem to be struggling finding the details of how to make my new car SORN straight away, does anyone have recent experience of this please?

Thanks in advance.

You do it online - you'll need the reference number off the new keep supplement.

Or you can still go into the post office and do it

Tried that (both suggestions) and wouldn't work, Post Office told me to ring some 0300 number which it seems I am going to have to, the website wouldn't accept the 11 digit ref from my "green slip". Could it be something to do with the car still being taxed with the previous owner I wonder?

Sorry, just checked on the website and it says

If you are a new keeper you can only make a SORN using a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) form V890. Go to www.gov.uk/dvlaforms

When I did it with V890, I actually had my SORN rejected because it had got to the DVLA at the wrong time. This is despite the form specifically saying that it can be sent WITH the V5, which is what I did. I sent the same form back again and it got approved.
