Striker side panels?

Hi All

I'm currently making new side panels for my Striker and can't decide whether to have the engine bay panels offset at the rear to allow hot air out.

I've made one side like this but I'm worried that by doing this I may be losing some stiffness that a fixed and riveted panel would give.

The vent will be about 320mm high and 25mm wide so an area of 8000 sq mm. My other option would be to have some vent holes at the rear of a fixed panel. My rough calculations seem to show that 4 50mm holes would give about the same area as the vent. I have a 50mm hole punch and flaring tool so could do a reasonably tidy job.

Any thoughts? Am I over analysing this?! :-)

My striker has normal flat panels with triangles cut out to allow venting where the chassis gaps are.
There are then flared riveted panels housing the holes.

Much the same as what you want but maybe keep the stiffness a little.

I need to make a removable panel to go around the exhaust manifold.

I can't see how the panel in the standard Striker attachment - riveted top and bottom would be all that structural. I suspect that you'll need a lot of rivets on the vertical plane to get it doing something useful.

You're spot on Tim. I'll be riveting to the diagonals behind the panels too. Not sure if it'll make the slightest difference but I'll do it anyway!

Hope you're making progress.

Personally i would be making both sides with a large triangle cut out. Both flares i guess will be the same.

Slowly but surely - the usual.
I'm disappointed that you're not ready for Combe on Monday.

The chassis is totally different on the driver's side!

I'll build it as is but can easily adapt the driver's side later if necessary.

I'm not sure when I'll be ready Tim but I am trying! I have a cottage renovation to finish by the end of April (tenant moving in!) I've also started a new business which is taking time I should be spending on the Striker - Fire Wales - Risk Management
