Cooling

I'm running a standard polo radiator, but due to cooling issues thinking of upgrading to something like below.
eBay Item

Anyone know if they are any good??

First question; why would that be any better than what you have?

Does it have more area?

Is it thicker?

Any other reason why it would reject more heat than the standard Polo radiator?

I have a 3 row, 55mm one on my MX5 turbo engined Haynes, same seller. These are flat bar and fin design so even if you only go for a 2 row version they should be more efficient than the usual ebay style round bar and fin design.

I thought I would mount it vertically for space reasons. 55mm rad and 75mm inter-cooler is pretty tight already in the nose and leaving space for hoses to pass the chassis was impossible.

Coupled this up to a 10" Revotec high power fan. I haven't ducted the nose yet and can hammer it along the motorway without going above 93* in the hot weather. Previously I would need to slow down to 55mph to allow the engine to get down TO 100* from 110+.

In traffic the fan kicks in at 97* and only takes 60 seconds to get the engine back down to 92*. Well happy.

Just out of interest and sorry for the hijack, but where did you get your exhaust manifold from Stot?

Thanks,
Shaun

Mine is a 1.6 and I got a cast manifold for a T3 turbo from USA. Fitted a Saab 900 turbo to it and made my own downpipe and exhaust.

That's my car in the eBay advert, I would defiantly recommend them.

I had over heating problems with the standard rad, this new one has completely resolved the problem

I would say the 42mm with ducting and a good fan would have likely been fine for me given the 55mm without ducting is doing the job well. The turbo produces a shed load of heat under the bonnet. I added ducting and large side vents too with a standard radiator but was still overheating quite often at speed so went for the 55mm just in case so on most N/A engine the 42mm should be plenty.

Cant recommend the Revotec Hi-Flow fan enough either. 10" is perfect fit for this radiator and it shifts some serious air. I find that the fan will come on at 97* where I have it set and then go off at 92* where I have it set, but the engine will drop into the late 80s before it starts heating up again so the rad is removing a lot of heat.

I've got a Yamaha R1 engine in my car so the 42mm is plenty. What engine have you got in your Tiger?

2lt duratec. I cut some vents in the bonnet to let some heat out and fitted an oil cooler as I was losing oil pressure when in traffic and temp 107-110deg.
I've decided to bite the bullet now and change the radiator.

I'd probably go for the 55mm just to be on the save side

Whats it like when you are moving? If its in traffic only and at speed it stays in range I would look at the fan first as it may suggest air flow is the problem rather than cooling capacity?

I had a 13" eBay 80W fan then decided to upgrade to a known brand 10" fan and its night and day the amount of air they move. Also the Revotec comes on to full speed almost instantly while the cheapo tends to wind up and down.

On a Zetec as was fitted bog standard in Mondeo the 3 speed fan only went to full speed at 115c.

If the problem is only in.traffic look.at the fan and airflow first. Check out the fan is rotating on the correct direction for the blade curvature.
