Out Of Stock, Grrr
Is it me getting crotchety in my old age or is it acceptable that you needn't stock stuff ?
Thinking of getting a rent free 15% gas cylinder, so I look them up on the web, phone nearest stockist for prices,
and when you get there…. "O, we don't actually stock them, but we can get you one in a couple of days."

Being crotchety and/or grumpy is perfectly acceptable in old age . It keeps us going, and it comes "with the territory" (or so I'm
told!).

Yep, boils my wee as well. I want a parts washer, just a small one that tool station and screwfix sell. Except they don't!
Despite being the shops where you can buy anything over the counter, reserve in one hour etc etc.. They don't stock them, next day only as long
as you register your details and commit your soul, or make two trips, one being a complete waste of time, money, wear and tear etc etc etc...
Don't mind eBay for small items that fit through the letter box, or are much cheaper, or only available there....
Its the apparent availability to buy things there and then, apart from it doesn't actually work....
I now wonder how I managed to get all the parts for my Striker in 1994....

I hardly buy anything from local retailers now, with the exception of a few who generally give good service. I'm not proud to be saying this,
but regrettably most local shops don't stock what I want (even basic stuff), or charge ludicrous prices.
And yes Paul, being grumpy is perfectly acceptable behaviour when the retailer deserves it!

I'm pretty sure there is a gas suppliers in Haverhill that stock non rental bottles and the best part is they deliver.

Phoning in advance or click and collect services are the way forward, it's not an option around here. ~25 miles to anything useful, you
don't make the journey unless you know what you need is there.
Saying that, loads of farmers and mechanics around here, you can usually get the thing you want in 3 hours if you know the right people.

I tried a click and collect with Screwfix a month back. I needed 50 off M16x50 bolts and nuts.
Haverhill had the bolts but no nuts and Bury St Edmunds had nuts but no bolts.
Braintree had neither.

In the future, try Suffolk Fasteners on the outskirts of Ipswich (behind Morrisons carpark) - they are a
good place for any metric fasteners. Cheap enough too. (If you don't mind driving to Ipswich, that is!).
Down-side is that they're only open Mon - Fri, as their main customers are trade. They will sell to ordinary folk though, but I wouldn't
go in there for just one nut and bolt...

The key words there are, "if you don't mind driving to Ipswich, that is." (or Mildenhall)
Screwfix
50 m16 nuts = £12.99
50 m16x50 sets = £14.52
Total £27.51
Drive to Haverhill
14m round trip = £1.70 diesel
40 mins lost work time = £10
Total £11.70
Drive to Ipswich
60m round trip = £7.50 diesel
2 hours lost time = £30
Total £37.50 They would need to give me the nuts & bolts to make it worthwhile.
Screwfix charge a fiver for next day delivery, under £40

Now back to this gas bottle malarkey.
This is why we need places that stock the damn stuff.
If you run out half way through a job you don't want to spend half a day driving, or wait days for delivery.
You need to be up and away, and back within the hour on the job.
Still living in hope, I'm off to a little factors in Cornard that even opens 10 till 4 on a Sunday.
I'm not going to phone. That way I will see what they stock. ( Hobbyweld stuff )
The boy is blasting & painting my trailer wheels and I need a tin of grease to re-pack the bearings anyway.

Then what have they been selling to me over the years? Even when I wanted some long UNC cap head bolts they had them in stock . Give them a ring,
worth a phone call as not everything is listed on their website.

Anyway, back to the subject.
Walked into Motorspares in Bures Rd and talk about stock. I had to fight my way in there were so many cylinders.
There's one less now.
Must go and play.
Well I couldn't play for long as the Missis wanted me to put a second coat on the kitchen walls.
First coat was green, about ten years ago. This coat was blue.
Anyway, pleased with the results. The welds that is.
