3D Printed Bolt Cover

Below is for a 19mm hex bolt. Anyone want the STL file?

hmm you do realise these are very common items? not quite sure why you would want to make your own on a 3D printer and their only 36p each.

nut covers

I can hand carve them out of wood but it doesn't make it a good reason too

You can buy a locost ready built too (albeit 2nd hand) for less than it costs to buy the parts. The enjoyment is partially in the making surely?

Guess you guys hit all the reasons

Yeah, not available readily in malta.
It was fun to design in cad (so can scale to any size I want)
It is still quite cheap and they get done on their own while I'm doing something else.

Oh yeah and because I can

Lol! Some might draw parallels on camo painted Bluebirds! It's part of the fun of what we do!

Also, if you have a 3D printer, you can just make one - or you can search online for a supplier, place the order, wait a few days until they arrive, then fit them.

I do have a 3D printer - and I'm going to save the file - if thepest will make it available!

Is there am open source cad program for stl? Fancy designing a drilling jig using 3dp. Makes more sense than trying to accurately drill holes on a circle at precisely 72 degrees in an alternator pulley. ..

Is this print from ABS of PLA and painted?

I have a printer too, its great to be able to make something and class it as DIY even if its a simple cover like yours. I've made a fair few things for my MK including a simple shaped cover to fit below the rear seatbelt anchors onto the top of the boot hiding the steel threaded posts.

Keep it up and thanks for sharing.

Sorry about my spelling, im an engineer and only work in numbers.

Have a look at Onshape, its not open source, but it is free, and can export STL files.

I use OpenSCAD for a lot of the stuff I make. It's absolutely free. It can be a bit daunting when you first get into it as it's a lot like programming or web page design, but once you get the hang of it it's very powerful. The best bit is that you can design something with parameters that others can change to suit their own needs.

Here's an example of something I made to hold my phone and charger - didn't take me too long to design, and it's now sitting on my desk doing its job, just in front of me.

I haven't yet made anything for my Locost, but I have a few ideas in mind to be done over the winter.

The print was in ABS plastic then finished with acetone mist. No paint, but you can still get a mirror like finish in ABS.
