I had problems a few years ago using Halfords oil and although I'm sure they probably have changed supplier by now the doubt lingers on in my mind.

Now if it were Castrol......

Cheers!

5 litres good 4 litres bad.
Buying 4litres of oil always cost you more ---- because you have to buy two to fill a sump and filter.

If Forties crude has come down in price by a huge amount why is lube oil still the same high price as it was 5 years ago ?

My tin-top takes over 5 litres anyway, so 2 fours or fives is normal!

My tin top takes just under 4 so also suits fine. I still buy 2 tho, whether 4l or 5l, as i want some to top up.

From experience, my Passt B6 2.0 TDI takes 4.5L of oil to show full on the dipstick so the buy is 5L to make sure you have enough.

That said, it doesn't need topping up in between services.

Admittedly engine oil prices are high, but if you paid £20 for 5l five years ago and are still paying £20 for 5l then in reality it is 20% cheaper due to an average inflation of 3.5% over that time.

Duckhams was 15 shillings a gallon in 1969.
I've used Halfords semi synthetic in my tin tops for a long time now with no problems.

Because the price of decent oil will be dominate by the processing costs of the crude and production costs of the esters and the additive packages rather than the price of crude itself.

Never had any problems with Halfords oil, it all comes from major oil manufacturers (e.g. Comma).

Semi-synthetic is slightly dilluted engine poision, if you want the engine, catalysts and oxygen sensor to last it pays to buy synthetic, preferable a good low ash synthetic but even a cheap supermarket synthetic is good . A modern engine at 100,00 miles that has run on sythnetics will have less internal deposit than a 5,000 mile engine run on mineral oil.

Istr in 2011 Morrisons were selling 5 litres of Texaco Havoline 5w/30 fully synthetic on offer for £8.75 --- normally they sold it at £13.50.
