Brake balance bar

Gent
I'm after a bit of advice. As most kit car have a bias balance bar on the brake yet the IVA says they need to be permanently locked. How have you gone about this and what will pass the IVA?

Don't take this as gospel but...

I thought that the perminently locked bit had been dropped and now they just had to be locked and labled to say "do not adjust" or words to that effect.

Have you read the manual?
Dont worry it doesn't bite!

Note 5: Bias bars and other mechanical adjusting devices fitted to twin master cylinders must be rendered inoperable by mechanical means
e.g. lockwiring of components.

And as above the note must read:

Adjusting front/rear brake bias may invalidate approval and breach Construction and Use requirements.

IIRC others have put bolts in to prevent on the fly adjustment and passed SVA/IVA.

Another idea might be to speak to a kit supplier/builder and ask what they do?

Passed my IVA just before Christmas and it depends on the IVA testers opinion. If I were you I might try to contact the test station or have a wander down there and ask them.

At Nottingham the IVA testers are more than happy with a locking nut on both sides. Description
Description

There not welded or anything. The tester said that rendering the adjustment inoperable is silly because people will be discouraged to change the balance if it NEEDS changing due to some mechanical reason. For example if you uprated the brakes you may need to change the balance.

The IVA manual is a thorough guide but testers will often bend the rules in certain cases if they believe it to be safer other times they won't bend at all. At my IVA he passed my Bias Bar but failed me on a radius on the rear reg light. My Dad even said 'if the car was to reverse into a pedestrian that reg light could give a nasty scratch'. The IVA man was unimpressed and added it to my fail list.

On the whole the IVA test is mega mega stressful but really it doesn't need to be. I was easily more stressed at IVA than the birth of my child. Stupid really. The tester failed me on 7-8 items and took me through what I needed to do to alter them. He couldn't have been better.

Good point!

My SVA inspector at Southampton would have been happy to talk through concerns before the test.

Hi by the way as this is my first post.
I built my special seven lookalike 2 years ago and mine passed with split pins fitted and a sign on the pedal cover warning any change invalidates blah blah.
However I passed second try due to other issues like emissions under dash padding etc.
