Engine/bellhousing /tranny hollow dowels

How far are the locating hollow dowels on a Ford xflow suppose to stick out? I have them on the block to bellhousing surface and the starter to bellhousing surface. There is nothing in the manuals that I have that says anything about them. Tks Russ

Can't remember how long the dowels are but I would say the holes they fit into have a machined "bottom" so the dowels cannot be fitted too far. The same would apply for the bell housing/ starter etc . Easy to measure ?
