Anyone used ingenie?

Searching around for car insurance for my imminently 17yo son and came across Www.ingenie.com Apparently they specialise in 'black box' insurance for kids and not only offer cheap insurance, offer money back for good driving - although you pay more if they drive badly! They seem to offer the only real prospect of insurance fo less than £1000 when he passes his test, if he behaves! Has any one out there got any experience with them?

Not come across them myself, but I do have a neighbours kid who turned 17 a couple of years ago. IIRC he had to pay £1k+ for 3rd party insurance on a £1k Vx Corsa. Now 19 he pays something like £500 on a 3 yr old VW Transporter. He's an apprentice mechanic and from what I've seen an excellent driver. Insurance for new drivers seems a minefield with many insurers or brokers offering GPS boxes to monitor the driving. With 10 and 8 yr old kids I'm not looking forward to them driving

ETA...My brother in law's younger brother recently started driving and got a deal with GPS box. His father (an amateur rally driver) then had to be careful when driving the son's car not to upset the GPS tracking on the car.

We use drivesmart with our son. He shares the car with my wife (legitimately, she uses it for work during the week days and he uses it evenings and occasionally at weekends, plus he is now at Uni).

Provisional at 17 was an extra £500 and once passed at 18 the premium was only £850, these compared to about £2k for normal insurance (base model 1.2l VW Polo). Just come down to £600 now he is 19 with no claims in the meantime. OK he is not gaining no claims but the difference saved more than makes up for that when he takes out his own insurance probably next year when he is over 20.

For us, this also encourages good driving behaviour and self restraint when out with his mates as we can see if he drives badly so gives him a legitimate excuse to be sensible when his mates egg him on. Also we gave him the incentive that if we got a rebate for good driving he would get it (£30 last year).

Edit - just be careful if you live in an area with speed bumps, I have a suspicion that this upsets the black box and thinks you are heavy breaking, based on the stats we get

Just got my 18 year old insured on his first car through Admiral and their 'LittleBox' black box offering. They are the cheapest by far! He has an '02 plate 1.4 Micra and his premium was around £800 for fully comp' and 8000 miles PA. This cost includes full get you home breakdown cover and legal assistance (both of which are optional add ons....). I would say that you should consider putting yourself on the policy as a named driver, it improved the policy in our case by over £200.....
We also looked at Ingenie and the same level of cover was £1400......

Well, I have to admit that last weekend I did make a steering column cover out of a couple of pairs of ladies tights ! The work very well as the matrix for a composite structure and create a very good bridging material (idea stolen from the West Coast Customs TV programme).

My daughter insured her car through Ingenie in November last year when she was 17. It was just over £1000 for a 2010 Ka. Interestingly, the best price was based on fully comp as opposed to 3rd party fire and theft and putting her mother on as a named driver also helped (but not me as I had a bump last year ).

As with all teenage insurance, she had to have a black box fitted (to the car, not her). The fitting was easy to arrange, but be aware that the fitter does an inspection on the car to make sure that its road worthy. She has an app on her phone that tells her every few days what her driving score is against a few indicators (braking, acceleration - not an issue in a Ka, speeding and cornering) and she gets a rebate every quarter based on the score. Over the year this can be up to 20% back or pay an extra 10% for bad driving.

So far, they are paying out, but she did not get a maximum pay out in the first quarter, we think because she had to do an emergency stop due to a dog running out in front of the car. Not her fault and the right thing to do, but she lost points because of it.

She's not had to make a claim yet, so no idea how good they are if something goes wrong.

Tempting to put the black box in the Viento for a couple of days for a laugh
