Rov V8 starter wiring?

AAARGH, just bought a new starter to find out i've probably been wiring the b****rd wrong from the start. Can anyone tell me the correct way to wire this confounded slab of bollo**s thats cursing my life at the moment?
I have 2 large terminals on the solenoid, one fastened to the motor, and 2 smaller terminals, 1 labelled "IGN". What wires do i put where? BTW, this is out of car on a test rig i made.
I tried earthing the motor to -ve on the bat, fastening a strap to the other terminal on solenoid to +ve on batt, then running a separate wire from pos to IGN and... click, solenoid fires but no starter. What am i missing, both of my units do this. Is is something to do with the other unused terminal?

large term on solenoid goes to battery via proper starter cable,earth body to - on battery,take a live from battery+ and touch either small terminals on solenoid and it should burst into life,spare terminal on solenoid will be for ballast bypass

Big fat wire goes to the large threaded terminal.

Battery +

Negative of battery for testing purposes should go to the earth (body) of the starter.

Now connect a piece of small wire from the positive connector to one of the terminals.

If nothing then try connecting it to the other terminal.

If the sarter is OK it will click the solenoid and fire up.

If all goes well above then you have found your solenoid connection. This goes to the start wire from your ignition swich or your start button.

The other one is for a ballast resistor circuit but can be discounted. I had a RV8 with no ballast circuit and no choke and never had a problem firing it up ever. So don't wory about it.

thanks for your help y'all, got a result.
Turns out the original motor was worn. The new motor is on and fine, but my battery i was using to test it had seen better days. Still, lesson learned.
