Steering Rack Questions

Hi Guys,

I have a steering rack off my old car. I know its a ford etc.
How do I check if its MK 1 or 11 and how do you check if its 2:4 or 2:2 ratios?

Cheers,

Assuming you mean escort? - Mk1 will have imperial threads on the track arms. Mk2 will be metric.

Turn it from stop to stop, if it turns 2.2 times its a 2.2, and if 2.4 times.... you get it.

Got ya!

So if I draw a line on the column connection at 12 o'clock, a 2:4 would go around twice and finish at say 24 mins past?

(60 mins divided by 10 as ratio is in 0-10 = 6 mins per :1 so 4 x 6 = 24 mins?)

Yes, draw it faintly, then when you have the correct figure, rub it out and remark a point when its bang in the centre (ie 1.1 or 1.2 turns). this will help with road wheel/rack/steering wheel alignment when car is finished.

Think thats the standard Escort Mk2. A 2.4 rack would make it much better to drive; A big improovement in the bends but a bit more twitchy in a straight line (but you soon adapt to that). They are available from RallyDesign and don't cost the earth. They also do 2.9 but not really worth it (I originally had one and the 2.4 is much better).
