2006 Saab 93 balance chain issue

Not quite a kit but my dad's Saab 93 2006 has developed a rattle which looks like it's coming from a loose or worn balance chain.
I say loose as I can push the tensioner in but that might be because it's reached its limit as the chain has stretched. Also all the guides etc are there and complete.

Do they really need the balance chain?
I figure I've got 3 options:
A:
get a new chain and tensioner and fit, but might cost a bit and I've only got this weekend to get the parts and fit;
For it's fixing the issue
Against: Cost; might not get the parts in time;faffage

B:
Get a new tensioner only, if it's not the tensioner then just remove the chain;
For: It might fix the problem for medium money and less faffage than doing the whole chain
Against: Cost; might not get it and it may just be a waste of money

C:
just remove the chain
For: Cheap; minimal faffage; won't have to wait for anything;
Against: doesn't fix the problem...

If anyone has a saab 93 without a balance chain, how does it run? Any noticeable vibration issues?

TIA
ChrisL

Is the water pump worn?
It is driven by the balance shaft chain, and play in the pump will result in a rattle and misfunctioning tensioner.
The chains do stretch so may be the cause of the problem, a couple of mm is enough to rattle.
There are balance shaft delete kits available (short chain and different guide), or the balance shafts can be machined down to remove the eccentric weights and refitted.
The balance shafts will need removal if a delete kit is used.
The pump does need a special tool to fit and align in situ without removing the chain, i can't remember if it's also needed if the chain has been removed.

Might it be one of the guides broken? http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=583545
