Flying with wheels!!! Help

OK, here's a strange one

We're going to visit a friend in San Francisco soon

He's got a historic Mini and is looking as shipping options to get a set of wheels out from the UK

I realised that we have spare allowance for 2 more suitcases, I'm looking at the option of taking them out as checked in luggage

Any thoughts? Has anyone ever done anything similar

These are second hand wheels, no tyres, we're travelling with Virgin Atlantic

I need to check sizes and weights, I think 2 should fit per case, here's the allowance
Weight per bag Up to 23kg (50lb) each
Dimensions per bag Up to 90 x 75 x 43cm / 35.5 x 29.5 x 16ins

Be fine. I took a machined metal item full of PCBs and wires and lead weights through hand luggage scans etc on 3 flights to Moscow, without even a blink. Often took bikes in boxes etc.

Thanks all, I'm weighting for the wheels to be sent to me.
There's 6 of then, 10 x 4.5J, so my thinking is 2 sausage shape bags, each holding 3 wheels side by side 10" diameter and about 15" long

I will check with the airline and also I need to check on any import duties, though I think that I should be OK as they are "mine", relatively low value and second hand

Any suggestions where I can get 2 Hello Kitty sausage shaped bags?
