4age wont start

Hi,
Its been a while since I have posted on the site, but I wondered if anyone could help me as I'm a bit stuck.
I am having trouble starting the Toyota 4age in my Westfield after an 8 month layup (running fine before) and fuel system modification.

The engine runs on the stock Toyota fuel injection system controlled by the Toyota ECU. The modification I’ve made is changing from a low pressure lift pump and MK II golf GTI high pressure injection pump unit to a single high pressure pump and a new sump added to the fuel tank. I’ve fitted an line pressure gauge just before the fuel rail and am getting 40 psi with the ignition on, which I believe is correct for the Toyota pressure regulator. So I can't see this as the source of the problem.

When I last tried starting the engine, I had a mix of old and new fuel (majority 8 months old) and was getting sparks when testing the spark plugs. However, no signs of life.

I’ve had trouble starting after the winter before, and then hesitation until fully warmed up, but this time there are no signs of life at all.

Next time I visit the car I am planning the following:
- New spark plugs,
- Drain and replace fuel
- Check injectors, I need to read up on the voltages and resistances that I should be testing for

Any other suggestions are welcomed, as I’d like to go prepared as it’s a 3hr journey to get to where the car is kept at the moment!

Thanks,
Andrew

Unless nothing really nasty happened like a jumped timing belt check spark and fuel
If you are getting a spark at the plugs next try---

Spray carb or brake cleaner into the intake and see if it fires up.
You can use an ordinary tungsten bulb test light as a "Noid Light" to see if the ijectors are getting both 12v power and control.

Have you ensured the coil & amplifier attached to it are properly earthed? No earth = no spark

That fuel pressure sounds rather low, but I'm not sure of stock pressure as I've always used the standard reg with the AGE - worth double checking?

Edited to say - another favourite is a seized alternator, engine turns over really slow & drags so much power to the starter there's nothing left for sparks!

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Thanks for the replies, and links
That fuel pressure is about right according to the Billzilla 4age website.
Engine turns over at a normal speed, not sluggish or anything.

I'll try the brake cleaner trick and do some injector tests at the weekend.
Cheers,
Andrew
