Chassis Number
I've just read the replies to my insurance thread and realised that I've not got a chassis number.
Do I just make on up? How many digits does it have to be? 17? from memory.
Or do I have to fill out some government form or other in order to get one?

from previous threads the process seems to vary immensly depending on your local sva centre/dvla office. give them a ring and ask them but you may get
conflicting answers between the two..

its best to phone your local office to find out their requirements you can get a chassis no. well before you finish.
This makes things easier as you get to sva not so much to do etc..

How do I go about getting the local DVLA office number? They are not listed and swansea won't give me it.
They told me that I've just got to fill out the necessary forms and they will contact me.

Ive just found these details on the net. All local offices have the same central 'depot' number.

Hi Vince If you are going to beverley sva like i did i made my own number up and that was ok for them

Thats right about Beverly. I got a VIN number plate from Tiger and they accepted it, so just make yourself a plate out of a bit of ali.
It's also worth contacting Beverly to get the paperwork started. I think you have to phone Swansea and get them to send a message to Beverly and
then they will ring you back! I say think because our lass did ours! When you send it back you can ask for an inspection and someone will come from
Beverly to look at the car. All he's looking for is VIN number and what major components were used (as you'll put on the form). The car
has to be no where near finished.
All this paper chasing means that Beverly will sort out all the paperwork before your SVA test and keep it in a file for you. When you pass, you drive
down the road and round the corner (literally) and they will register your car there and then! Job done!

I called the call centre today and they said that as long as you creat a unique one, no centre can refuse it. They are happy to take a made up number
as long as you ask. If you write to Swansea and request the number at the start of your build, they will allocate it for you by post.
Oh yeah and you can not use a Q, I or Z in the number and it has to be between 9 and 17 digits. But they prefer 17.

My chassis number came by post from the VRO but a lot of people make there own up,mine has 7 letters which are SABTVRO then ten numbers,

Just a thought - how do you ensure that it is unique?
I was given mine when the inspector from Manchester came round to check the vehicle. She was very helpful in guiding me through the process. It seems
to differ from area to area though. I think that it's a good idea to contact the local office when it looks a bit like a car and well before
SVA.

Just a thought - how do you ensure that it is unique?
When you bear in mind that choosing a combination of 6 numbers on the national lottery gives you something like a 1 in 40 million chance of winning.
If you then make that 17 digits, either alpha or numeric, unless you go for summat daft like a,b,c,1,2,3 (you get my drift) then your chances of
duplicating someone elses chassis number must be..................................... more than 1 in 40 million

I made my chassis number up. Made up from Loc - for locost, 04 from SVA year, driver number from licence, BKS for black and silver! 17 digits
sorted.

My 9 yr old son is helping me with my build and I thought I'd make the VIN mean something too.
CRA1G (me) T0M (my son) N1CH0LS0N (our surname)
CRA1GT0MN1CH0LS0N - 17 digits!!!
(EDIT) we are looking at calling the car something original too on the V5... More to follow when further into the project...

Not knowing any better, I wrote to my local DVLA office to tell them what I was doing, and proposed my own VIN.
They sent some forms back, gave me a name and number for the local contact, and approved the number. Painless.
As for the car name - it's a Lathyrus 7!

Just spoken to the lovely lady at my local office so i can get any info packs etc that I need.
She says that the choice of VIN policy is nationwide but you have to request it - they won't offer it as default.
If you don't ask, you don't get!!!
