Old loom or stand alone ecu

Hi folks. I'm building an Audi powered mid engined machine. Very basic mobile chassis with rudimentary body on top. So, no doors, screen, etc. Bearing in mind I know little about modern day electrics, is it feasible to save the donor loom and adapt it or is there a decent budget ecu out there that will do what I need. I'd put some pics up but gallery not accepting my 300kb shots.

Budget implies doing a lot of work yourself.

Cheapest is probably speeduino, next is microsquirt.
