MSA Hillclimb requirements

Hello all,

I completed my car about 20years ago. I sprinted/hillclimbed it in 03 and 04. Due to having plenty of spare time and not going out much for some reason, I've decided to renovate the car in the hope to hillclimb her again in '22.

I've looked at the blue book and bamboozled myself. My car was built with 1" thick pva clad foam squabs, back and bottom, as my 'seats'. Do I need a proper composite seat?
If not I assume I need to weld onto the rear cage a >10*10cm steel plate head restraint?

Crazy as it may seem, if your car is road legal then you just need yellow tape on the battery negative and an arrow on the ignition key indicating how to turn it off.

If it’s an unregistered car add a rear hoop to MSA spec and seat belt.

In both instances you need correct clothing and bash hat.

Yes, I got in touch with a regional championship sec who stated I must have a full cage (engine is bigger than 2litre).

Way, way back '03 my foam squabs were considered to be std affair for Locost's so it was fair game!

I have been on uphill, yes. I haven't got a clear cut answer yet, maybe I will in time.....

I also see from '22 I need a fire extinguisher. I assume under the drivers knees?

It's staggering how much is freely available to buy these days. It brings a tear to my eyes now, as I fought the hard way to build the bloody thing from scrap in '01.

Hi

The answer to the cage depends on what class it goes in.
Is it roadgoing or not?

I assume Not from what you've written, so lets deal with it with that assumption; -

Head restraint - often bolted to the roll hoop diagonal, but welded is probably just as easy and you'll need a head restraint.

Re the seat, there's no requirement for a FiA seat or similar, foam bag seats and similar are fine - but that's is also a little dependent on class, however there shouldn't be any way of getting a locaterfield into one of the classes where it would be

Not come across the Fire Extinguisher bit.. where's that been mentioned?

Yes, road legal. Engine >2000cc though. At the moment it only has the half/rear cage.

Fire extinguisher, page 174.
"Existing vehicles competing prior to 1st January 2019
may comply with the following until 1st January 2022. New
build vehicles from 1st January 2019 must comply with
Appendix 3."

I thought road going had to be a production car based on numbers produced? Sticking all kits in Sports Libre? Also arent a lot class baser regs based on the event SRs rather than the blue book?

Hello. Sort of but generally accepted as a kitcar. Over 1000 built, engine was mass produced too.

Yeah, (re)learnt that at the start of the year. I got in touch with the local sprint/hillclimb championship coordinator and he stated as it's road legal I should compete in B3 - road legal.
He sees my car a lightly modified Locost therefore B3. Otherwise I would have to be in sports libre, which is a pain in itself.

Hi

Road legal locosts go in 'Roadgoing Specialist Production' it's a little vague as to the number built equaling the 'specialist' bit but the general consensus is that's the right place for them so nobody seems to mind!

Whoever told you that it needs a full cage is wrong as regards the rules (if it stays in Roadgoing), though completely correct as regards safety IMHO (a mate of mine flipped one long ways at Wiscombe..) so if you can I would, but your current cage will meet the rules if you're happy with it and you enter in the roadgoing class.


That's the main rule for Fire Extinguishers, the recent changes to alter (for 2022 onwards for existing cars) what type and size of extinguisher you need IF you need one - As far as I'm aware there's been no suggestion to make one mandatory for hillclimbs and sprints.
If you do have one it Has to be working and in date.
