Pinto inj ignition wiring - please help!!

(James - i hope you dont mind me stealing your thread and pics).

I hope someone can shed some light on a problem i have been musing over. I have done a search already and scanned James thread http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=18515
very carefully. It seems however that my colours are different. i will try and explain.

Donor is 2.0i Pinto (1988). Injection junked in favour of 38DGAS carb (no sensors or stepper motors on the carb).
I have the Haynes manual - wiring diag is ref 13.48

Dizzy - no vacuum advance. Plug on side (i believe to be hall effect trigger) with 3 connections. It looks like dizzy B on James' photos. Loom plug has 3 wires - Brown (earth), Black/red (connects to black/red of amplifier), blue/yellow (connect to blue/yellow of amp).

Q1 - are my assumpion correct so far.

Amplifier (called TFI Module in the book). Looks like amp B on James pics (above link - page 1).
Has 6 wires. Numbers on it are "Motorcraft E5RF - 12A297BA 7E22B). Held onto ali base with 2 torx screws.
Wires as follows in order of appearance (and my guess for location);
Brown - Earth
Green - -ve side of coil (and on to rev counter)
Black - +ve side of coil and connected to sw live (from ign key?).
Black/red - to dizzy black / red
Blue/red - ??
Blue/yellow - to dizzy plug.

I have some questions
1. Will this amp / dizzy set up i have work when there is no EEC IV module or injection kit etc?
2. Do my assumptions above look right?
3. The blue/red from TFI Module goes to the EEC IV module on the wiring diagram. I dont have one of these - where should i put it? (or should i ask - what is it for?)
4. From the amp, the blue/yellow and blue red go into a black shielded wire. The blue yellow from dizzy also goes into black shielded wire. Do i have to keep these shielded and earth the shielding? They must be signal wires of a sort - but what?

Phew! im out of breath now. Hope you have kept up. Im connecting to premier loom which looks clear enough.

I hope you can help,
Many thanks in advance.
Darren.

Hi Darren,

No probs using my thread!

1)
It sounds like you're in the position I was in when I first fired up the engine.

Conrod and I used all the bits from the EFI car (amp B and dizzy B in my pics). This got it running. Only problem with this setup is that you have no ECU giving you any sort of ignition advance.

The result is poor fuel economy as it'll only run properly at full throttle (and there's probably the odd time when you don't want full throttle- even in a Seven! )!

I would highly recomend you find the amp A and dizzy B that are in my pictures as life'll be a lot easier.

2) See above.

3) Unfortunately I can't rememeber which diagram Conrod and I used (to get it running with the EFI amp/dizzy). I know that there were several different ones that looked like likely candidates in Heynes. If I can find which one we used tonight I'll let you know.

4) It's weird that bit isn't it! I didn't worry about the shielding too much- I just buzzed out which wire started and ended up where and took it from there.

I have the Premier Loom too. Haven't even *started* down the electrics minefield yet!

All I can say is I'd get the carb amp (with plug if poss) and dizzy if I was you. The ones labelled 'A' in my pictures which are from 1.6Sierras and Transits IIRC. Atleast you'll get an advance that way!

Hope that helps,

James

Thanks for that James.

Ive just come off the phone to Mac#1 as well and the penny has just dropped ref the advance / retard. My theory now is that the blue/red wire is the signal from ECU to the amp (probably earlier from a crank sensor), that tells the amp to send a signal to the dizzy via blue/yellow wire which effects the advance electronically via the hall effect thingy. The wires are shielde to avoid cross talk etc - hence the voltage will be variable within them - not what i want.

So - cutting to the chase - i need dizzy A and amplifier A (ideally both from same working donor with plugs). Possibly from;
1. 1.3 or 1.6 pinto Sierra's (and possibly pre '86 2.0OHC) with vacuum advance 2 wire dizzy(but not economy models with hall effect 3 wire dizzy),
2. pinto and carb'd transits (i think P100 also has this).
Then i can get vacuum advance by connecting the dizzy to my inlet manifold.

Does anyone have these bits cheap?

Unfortunately im not in position to turn engine over yet but could possibly cobble the wiring together to test for spark after i get the right bits.

If you are in the scrappy looking for plugs to attatch the amp and for the dizzy look out for pinto transits as they are the same connections
