Cosworth 283mm front disc conversion
Afternoon lads, i've just completed my front disc upgrade on my sierra xr4i and thought I would post the process on here as it is relevant to
those using the sierra front axles. However i'm not quite sure on caliper spec on later models, I know that the xr4i caliper was also used on
the mk4 rs turbo and granadas. I know that this is going over into overkill territory for the front of a seven - but then i know that some people go
for show!
It was time to replace the discs on the front anyway so I thought why not upgrade rather than replace.Standard discs on a 4i are 263 (approx). I was
quoted £120+ for the tarox 'monza' (?) range of budget grooved discs so thought i'd see what i'd get on ebay. Cosworth 2wd
283mm EBC grooved and dimpled. A set went for a stupidly low price of £52 but I still got a pair cheap at the £100 mark. Next up it was pads and I
managed to get a set of Ferodo D2000 Fast Roads for £19.99 delivered although they did not mention they would fit an xr4i (only mk4 rs turbo). Finally
caliper re-location brackets from Clint over at turbosport @ £40 delivered.
First off the original setup.
Size comparison:
The brackets were designed for relocating calipers on an escort (rsturbo etc) where the caliper mounts towards the front of the car - and also at a
different angle to the sierra calipers.
The right bracket is how they arrived, the left has has a section at the top ground out to allow it to sit correctly against the upright.
Just to make sure it cleared I also took a little off the actual upright in the corner. The top upright caliper lug needs to be tapped out with a m12
x 1.75 to except the bracket retaining bolt from behind. The bottom upright caliper lug can be left alone as a bolt and nut go through.
Caliper bracket in place.
The caliper carrier needs some metal removed from a raised area in the middle which due to the new location stops it being bolted up flat on the new
bracket.
Disc and carrier bolted up.
Time to compare the old pads to the new to see if I really need to fit the new ones
Still look like a bit of friction material on there......
Maybe not..............
Push the caliper piston back in with some clamps I picked up (Metal frames and cheap as chips from lidl) copperslip and pop the pads in.
Only the retaining clip to put back on but I need to put the other disc on as they are directional (doh!)
Bob's your uncle
Hope that may be of use to some of you.
Cheers
G

maybe even a link to turbosport selling the brackets would be handy too.
I went for 4 pot HISPEC calipers (good calipers but crap service) and 280mm grooved, unvented discs for the front of my Indy.

Update:
Great improvement in braking on the 4i - so expect that plus lot more on a lightweight seven!

i dont suppose you know what size the basic model discs are? i realised that some discs fit 13" wheels, but others (the 263mm ones on a 4x4)
dont fit 13s.
