Chris W - Sticky threads...

Hello...

Been thinking for a while what might really help this forum to be a more easily accessible library of information...

Many forums have sticky threads that stay at the top of the forum and are bolded or something, containing useful or frequently asked for information. Sometimes these stickies might be a thread itself, still active, but often the stickies are a single post containing a few links to other threads full of relevant information, and are themselves locked to replies - sort of an FAQ.

I think this would be a great idea in some places on this forum to help out new and longterm users alike.

For example, the chassis forum could have a few stickies regarding Cymtriks stiffness mods, discussions on live/irs/dedion, painting etc; the running gear forum could really do with a sticky containing links to the few really good threads on sierra diffs, shafts drums/discs, making LSDs etc etc; bodywork could sticky good threads on rivets, sealant; the electrolysis thread could be stickied in locost related; and so on.

It would take some collation I know and I'd be happy to help. I really think it'd be great to have some of the really good info that is burried in here to be easily accessible.

What do you reckon?

Liam

Sounds like a good idea to me. Chris may need some help finding the related links though!

The only word of warning Id have against that is to set a limit of say 3 or 5 stickies max per room, otherwise the latest thread ends up 3/4 down the first page as happens on some sites Ive been on!

I think putting one sticky in each forum, containing links to the most popular topics/solutions would be a good idea. Rather than several seperate stickies for each thing.

The front page has a box containing "most popular threads". Perhaps this can be broken down and visible on a per-section basis

TBH, one or 2 of the threads on the homepage are pretty off-topix.

Would it be possible to have a separate FAQ section under each heading? It would be great if a moderator can then tag a good example of a commonly repeated thread, so that it shows in the FAQ section, while the thread remains active in the normal section, so new info can be added in the usual way.

Cheers

All good ideas guys, but I would need someone to take charge of it. Just keeping tabs on all the topics and maintaining the site keeps me busy!

Perhaps identifying some of the common question areas is a good place to start, we can then fnd threads that cover these areas well to include in a section specific sticky.

eg

chassis section:
bump steer, castor, book errors, front suspension jigs, aly/steel floor

donor cars:
which donor, what parts to keep, sorn your donor car

engine section:
sump mods + clearance
fuel pumps
carbs
exhausts

running gear:
sierra front uprights
props
track widths
sierra difs and ratio's
capri-/cortina/escort axles

etc etc

Ned.

beware, I've got yellow skin

It's been mentioned before - but how about a wiki? (user-maintained on-line encyclopaedia)

how about we use this thread to arrange the required info? find all the essential links from each section individually, then chris can set up a single thread as sticky in each section. Make it locked too, and then just edit in new info as the need arises?

to expand on what ned has done already, someone could pick the chassis section, find links to the best threads (no limit on number, as they all end up in a single sticky thread) post them here, then chris could copy and paste into a new sticky thread.
