Rover V8 Clutch. - CHEAP Supply??

Having just Paid out over £100 for a Clutch for the RV8, I am Dismayed that my Land Rover Clutch went as well.. well its done 98K miles.

So I order a new clutch for my 200Tdi 2.5litre Turbo DIESEL Landy.

When I unbox it Its almost Identical to the Rover SD1 one that I paid TWICE the price for. The LR one is Borg and Beck, and includes the Release Bearing all for £51 + Vat. The SDI clutch is a "After Market" part of resonable standard.
The only difference is the Diesel centre plate has an extra set of small springs to stop the plate rattling which is common on Diesel Clutches.

The Cover fits the SDI Flywheel, 9.5" job.
The Centre plate fits exactly on the LT 77 gearbox splines. I think Rover has used a load of Leyland parts with different numbers again.

I got it from Paddockspares.com if anyone is interested.
I will be fitting them in their respective cars as the Landyone is a pig to do, as the LR Gearbox and Xfer box weighs almost as much as the Viento

But I may take the Old LR clutch and put it in the Viento to see if it works / fits.. It may be a useful bit of info.

PS... Look at their LR Series 11 (two) Brake master Cylinders... Just like my £30 ones,.. but theirs are about £16.

Would definitely be interested to see if this works out as I'm in the market for a clutch for my RV8. Also after a flywheel for that matter...

Right, I have been down the garage with the verniers.

The driven plate appears to be almost exactly the same. The difference is simply the springs between the spline and the fibre section. I know this will be so, as usually diesel engines have extra set of Anti rattle springs. The dimensions and thickness is all with in 0.5 mm.

There are differences in the cover plate.
The LR one has 15 fingers, and the SDI 19 thinner (less wide) ones however the actual thickness of the spring fingers is the same. This would explain why the LR clutch is heavy, and probably the SD1 a bit lighter in operation (not weight). The depth from the faceplate to the release bearing part of the finger springs is the same. The Face plate on the LR is thicker, but does not seem any heavier (weighed one in each hand).

The release bearing is a lot different. However the SDI one uses the early Rover one (separate bearing and carrier). You need to completely change this to the later type.
You get the newer Release Brg in the kit. All you should need it the curved slipper pads (NOT the sdi ones) a new plastic "L" clip.
Now, The Pressed steel operating Arm is the same, I still have the knackered one I took out 10 years ago. (Memo to me... Must tidy up more often).
I recommend you fit a NEW one every time. They have a habit of the pivot ball punching a hole in the steel arm. This is what I blieve has happened to my Landy. The SDI arm is £29, same item at paddocks £8.98. I also fit a new plastic clips on the slave cylinder pushrod. They are pence, as is the L clip on the release bearing, and a bugger to change once its all back together and in the motor.

Basically you neeed ALL the LR release bearing parts Arm and all. You may need to sort a different pushrod as I havent looked at this. Everyone wants £50 plus for a SDI slave cylinder, I got mine elsewhere for £31 including a new pushrod. thats £20 difference.

When they fix my clutch on the Landy, I am getting the old one back (its only done 10 yrs / 96k miles by me) and I will fit it to the Luego and try it on the garage floor before I drop the engine and box in.
That will be a clincher.

I am fairly confident it will work.
I also wonder (just thought of this) that the "Expensive" "Performance" Borg and Beck kits you see about arent this clutch!!.
priced at nearly £400. Now wouldnt that be a price hike!.

If anyone wants to try this, and if it dont work, then dont blame me! As I am still at the Ideas stage.

I know there was a lot of commonality in B. Leyland around that time, and many parts are common.
eg the Discovery rear lights on the early ones are Metro Van rearlights. and cost different amounts depending which stores you went into. ie LR franchise or a Leyland / Unipart stores.

It will be a few weeks before I can confirm all this.

STC8358 LR 200Tdi Clutch Kit 55.31
FTC2957 Clutch Release Fork - all 4 cyl engines 8.98
FRC5255 Slipper pads (2 reqd) 70p ea.
FRC9568R Clutch Release Bearing 7.49
this is IN the kit, but you may want it separately. (just for the part numbers)

550732G Clutch master Cylinder genuine girling Lucas 19.40 or 10.43 for a pattern one. there are pictures in the series 3 clutch section. Rimmers is £70.
Also look at the Series 2 Clutch master Cyls... look like Brake Masters you just paid £30+ each for!! (£9 and £19 pattern / Girling). I dont know which size bores these are. So beware and check FIRST.
FRC3327 Plastic Clip for pushrod (1) 75p
FRC3416 Plastic Staple (1) 41p

V8 Flame traps 603330 1.99 each (metal bulb in the breather pipes)
ALL + Vat.

above from paddockspares.com

I got the Slave Cylinder from brakeparts.co.uk Brakeparts international
£31 +vat +p&P.

Phew!... a lot of Nerdspeak there (part No's etc)

MORE:

The Clutch Master Cylinder arrived today, Its got a 3/4" bore. More than enough for Locost / V8 Uses.
I got the genuine Lucas Girling one for £19.
Lucas part no PND126
Funnily enough says Jaguar on the box!
and Part No 550732. and 19mm Bore, but has 3/4" on the side as part of the casting. Told you Leyland used the parts on other motors.. Jag this time!
The Rod length is 3.25" from the rubber gaiter. just a threaded end. You will probably need a "U" shaped end bit on it with a clevis pin.

Also bought a 9/16" special socket, 1/2" sq drive, long thin extension ending in the 9/16 socket (all one part. However the socket walls are VERY thin, so you can undo the leyland Propshaft bolts. Otherwise its a pig of an open ended spanner job. And there is a LOT more room under my Landy than there is in a Locost / Viento tranny tunnel. ie If you have a LT77 box, this is useful, if a bit expensive at about £14.
Also I got some LR ERR3340 Oil Filters for £4.25 each. These are genuine LR filters and are a tenner a piece at my local franchised dealer!. They are slightly shorter that the Range Rover ones, so dont hang down so far. I have used these for 10 years in my landy. Ok its a diesel and has only done 69K miles, I've only owned her for 11 years. (1984 LWB and its done 180K, but only 96K on this one, which was brand new when I put it in!)

Right, Got the Landy back last night.

I have done a much closer comparison of the plate and cover.
The Sd1 Cover has One more finger spring, and they look a little thinner, but seem to measure up the same.
Same:
width
height
Distance from release bearing point to flywheel face.
Both and spigot holes are identical.

The fibre plate is a little different, although same splines, , and size.
the centre is different, but I dont think it will make any difference, as there is a fair bot of room under the clutch finger springs.
The diesel plate has extra anti rattle spring, but I dont thin it should matter too much.

However... The REAL DIFFERENCE is with the release arm and bearing.
I know the SDI uses the older type with the square slipper pads, and the two piece carrier/bearing.
The Landy uses the one piece bearing.
This also has a larger hole and will not slide parallel on the shaft cover. I think there is a conversion sleeve available to take up the gap so the bearing sildes along square to the shaft and so the slipper pads dont fall out.

There is also a note on RPI's www.v8engines.com site about using different release bearings and you need to use the complete system, ie arm, pivot, bearing, slippers, clips etc. That shouldnt cause too much of a problem, however, I am unable to try it out, and have spent the whole day getting very little done, except splittin my fingernail down the centre from top to bottom... and it hurts

I will still be following this up as I thinkits worth getting to the bottom of it.

Oh.. the Pivot ball on the Landy is bigger, and mine was eaten away, but it was the release bearing that had collapsed and gone through the finger springs and got stuck. I have some photos and they will be in my archive when I upload them. I have put the new parts by the old, for comparison. Even the new (oval) slipper pads have worn away and they rest on the nylon bearing housing!
You can see the wear on the ball and the bearing. So I will press on. I think you can get away with the plate and cover, but the bearing bits need more investigation.
Anyone who tries this, dont blame me if it does not work, as I have not confirmed it with a vehicle running on the road yet.

Interstingly I trawled the net several times, and others found they needed the right combination of release arm bits to get it to work, especially the pivot ball which comes in different sizes (for the indent in the arm), and different heights which is probably just as important.
Also there are different distances between th pivot ball and the centre of the geabox shaft, which will affect which arm you need. Interstingly my SDi box is suffix C, with the 0.5" spigot bearing, and the landy is much larger and a different suffix, D, I think.
Anyone finds anything out please let me know.

My mate owns a company called Specialist 4X4 Services. He advertises chassis replacements in the LR mags. Hardly anyone can touch him for prices. He does a lot of new and 2nd hand spares. His father is in close contact with a lot of the large breakers yards in the country. If he hasnt got it he can usually get it (all legit - they pride themselves in running a straight business).

Hi schassis replacement jobs are always spot on. Includes suspension, brakes etc etc and will also do other work as add ons (paint, doors, bulkheads etc etc).
If you need parts give him a call - Brian Patchett 01388 458578 or 07801 111907. Tell him you got the number off me (Darren Wake) and he may do you a good deal.

Cheers,
Darren.
