sump depth
Hi
can anyone help with an approximate depth of sump for an engine 17.5 inches
high from crank centre to top
I expect you can move the engine up to gain some clearance but depending on the car bodywork(will be building an indy
or velocity but would like to get the engine
and transmission sorted first)
the standard sumps are as follows
fiat 131 2000tc 200mm from crank centre to bottom of sump
alfa romeo 2l twin spark 215mm from crank centre to bottom(164 sump)
I was really hoping to upgrade to the alfa engine as its all alloy and should be quite light and reasonably powerful but the sump could be a problem

163mm centre of crank to bottom of sump and type 9 gearbox bellhousing on mine. (zetec)

Cheers dusty and how much ground clearance do you reckon youll have between the sump and the road surface
The fiat sump is around 30 - 40mm too deep might get away with it but the alfa one looks to be around 50mm too deep which is a shame because its
alloy and would be a pain to modify.

If you can find one a Fiat Argenta sump is smaller,you would need the oil pickup pipe as well though you could shorten yours.Good Luck Ive been
looking for one for ages! Are you using a Fiat gearbox? If so have you given the propshaft any thought?

Will have about 5 inches when I put the engine back in.
There is a pic of a fairly clever bloke chopping an alloy alfa sump in Dec PPC. He also made his own bellhousing to graft the alfa engine onto a type
9.

Hi Glan its good to see someone else on here using a fiat twin cam
The Fiat twin cam is a great engine and surprisingly compact compared to other engines
I am using the Fiat 131 gearbox with Abarth remote quickshift
As for the propshaft I had a quick look at a sierra propshaft spider from a type 9 last week and and measured across the bolt centres and if my memory
serves me correctly was around 87mm (bolt to bolt)which is the same or very close to the fiat spider but I would have to see them both together to be
100% sure on that
how much shallower do you reckon the argenta sump is?

the guy who chopped the alfa 164 sump in PPC is Owelly on this site.
