house hold heating problem
Hi
My heating has gone wrong!!
it stopped working yesterday, but the hot water system works fine thru the boiler on timed and permantly switched on
the obvious thing for me to do was change the thermostat, yet this has not made any differance at all
the boiler works fine for the hot water system,
the boiler does not switch on for heating
would I be on the right track if i changed the main heating/water control box ??
as it is a randall 4033 that must have been in the house 20 plus years
any idea's that might help, would be very appreciated
except for move!!
get a thicker duvet!!
and, the best bit for me. is I am on nights tonight so I wont be cold, but wifey will be

do you know if you have power to the boiler or pump when its on heating? If your not getting power to the boiler when on heating It sounds like the
programmer as you say.
edit ; but it could also be the motorised valve...
trouble is there loads of systems and ways of doing them...

thanks for the reply, i dont know if ive got power, but the water side works fine
tomorrows job will be to connect the heating side wires, to the water side switch, and see if that works, but i must admit a motorised valve is
another angle, and im on that now

If you have motorised for both CH and HW check that both sides of them are hot or in the case of a 3 way valve that all 3 are. If the valve is
stuck/not operating correctly then only 2 will be warm ( flow into it and flow out to hot water ). like Colibriman says there are lots of different
systems and lots of potential fixes. you can u2u me if you want some more pointers. really need to know more about the system to give any helpfull
guidance.

i have 2 motorised valves, and both are hot on both sides ??

Is your pump running? If it's like ours the hot water is gravity and the heating is pumped. Switch it on to heating and see if the pump runs. If
not, unscrew the cap off the front and turn the rotor with a thin screwdriver to see if it will run.

Boiler switched live comes from the zone valves, via the orange wires.
Turn on a demand for heating only at time clock, turn up room stat and check for 240v on the orange wire out of the heating zone valve. could be a
faulty timer, room stat or zone valve.

now nothing is happening no water no heat
im cold, cant wash, smelly, just finished nightshifts so tired,
plumber due tomorrow
so may have to sell that big piece of metal in the garage , (locost) to help finance mr plumber as he will probably have an inexaustable urge to rip
the money away from me like the last robbiing bastard did when my kitchen ceiling fell in due to a leak
Im quite sure their not all the same, just the ones down south

£132 gets the thing fixed from british gas, Just don't expect anyone on Monday (industrial action).

all fixed now, motorised valve on the heating side , which unknown to all also stopperd the hot water,
it was bloody cold in here for a couple of days

Get a boiler plan going with the gas people or boiler makers,mine is £120 a year with potterton.
For that you get a yearly service and next day call out for repairs,if you sell that pile of metal in your garage it covers next years premium
