Ditching the Donor, keeping the V5

I've just started properly searching for a suitable donor. However, as I don't have much room for the build my plan was to obtain the donor, strip all necessary parts and then take the remainder of the donor to a scrappy, all before my kit arrives and the build starts for real.

What do I do about the V5? Don't I need it for SVA, but don't I need to send it off to say the car has been scrapped? Do I get it back from DVLA to take to SVA, adn will it matter that the V5 says the donor was scrapped?

Or am I just panicking over nothing?

GO,

I stripped my Sierra down to a shell (having first had the V5 changed to my ownership). I also removed the plates and VIN plate.

Phoned a scrappy up, and he collected it (for £35) no questions asked.

So, I'm still the proud owner of a Sierra:-)

I also took a couple of photo's of the car.

That makes sense, was a bit concerned about some cheeky mongrel using the vehicle id to get up to no good and get me loads of points\fines etc!

well this helps me as i hav just taken the last piece from my shell and im about to get some help in carrying it from my garage! next i need a trailer to get it to a scrappy! but are the scrappy lkely to take it without documentation?

You will need to send the log book off still to declare that the car is off road (SORN).

well yes i seem to hav balls'ed up somewhere as i declared that i was scrapping the car myself! and so didnt need to declare SORN! is it still possible to use the cars plates?

If you sent the V5 back to swansea its probably gone mate.

If your not bothered about getting a Q plate it doesnt matter though,just get a new chassis number from your local VRO and after SVA they will issue you with new plate but with Q reg.

you can NEVER use the plates or regs from the donor car!

You need proof that most parts came from an identifiable single car - thats why you need V5 proof.

you will then get age related plates relevent to the age of the donor.

YOU CANNOT reuse the VIN number - its technically possible for you to use the donors plates if you get them on a retention certificate, then pay to have it transferred. But thats doing nowt for you.

I have my original V5. And I had the car scrapped. Basically, I didnt reg the car in my name after I bought it from auction, so what they dont know they cant come after me for. I just need to show ID for a donor - who its registered to insnt an issue.

It would be safest to declare it scrapped with a 'lost' log book.......but im not a legal expert.

Q Plate

oh well i guess a Q Plate aint the end of the world! maybe gonna mean that the car wont be worth as much if i ever come to sell but big deal thats not what im building my own car for!

Your right the V5 is for ID purposes,but i needed to put a different engine number on my book as i changed the engine.

I therefore had to register the book to me,this is why i declared the car SORN.(off road notification)

Officially no reason why not but people have mentioned having difficulty convincing the DVLA that they're replacing their 2.0 with a 900cc in a 1tonne Sierra!
Something to do with trying to dodge road tax!

being a bit pedantic - but a sierra is prob about 1.3 tonnes.

My wife was looking for a new car recently

we looked at the polo.

the basic one has 55hp (!!!) and is 1170 kilos.

say what?

A hatchback usually weighs around 900 kilos - a metro was about 875.

needless to say we didnt buy one - id still be on my way back from the dealer in it.

1170Kgs? Aye Carumba!
Makes my MK2 Golf seem quick- nearly double the BHP and 900(ish)KGs!

Has anyone noticed how new cars are getting bigger and bigger? The new Polo is as big as the MK1 Golf. The new Mini is bigger than my MK2 Golf and the new 3-series BMW is nearly as big as the old 5-series!

My Sierra goes to the Scrapper tomorrow, but I've declared it SORN.

I have also registered it with a different engine, this is very common. It's amazing what engines have been in some Cortinas! My Sierra was fitted with a VX engine, how strange, now who would bother to do that?

FYI I had a Vectra and needed a new engine. VX fitted a new one but it suffered psiton slap, so a week or so later I got another engine fitted.

I had concerns over engine no not matching the V5. I asked the servioce manager what happens and he said they stamp the original engine no on the new one. That means there are now 3 3 vx / msd engines out there with the same stamp .. .

You're right you know.

A couple of years ago, I heard that the new Golf weighs about 900 lbs more than the Mk1.

So, that's why the government wants us to drive around with cats, unleaded fuel etc, to offset the massive pollution caused by building cars with with so much lard.

As an aside, was talkiing to the bloke I got my engine from, he's got a mate with harnesses in his airbag equipped car. When he crashed it, he didn't touch the airbag.

Maybe airbags or harnesses should be the option.
