What gearbox?

I have a type 9 (although its in need of a serious clean), but have been looking on recent race winners & most success seems to have been with 4-speed gearboxes? Anyone got any ideas about which is best?

Also, my clutch is knackered. Which clutch is best for either gearbox? (it needs to be race-acceptable).

All help gratefully appreciated.

I've got a 5spd in mine and it seems to be ok it weighs a little more than the 4spd box but has the same ratio in 4th as the 4spd plus an extra gear if ya need it at for example thruxton! I'm using a fast road clutch from a mk2 escort i believe.

Hi it's a personel choice but works like this 4 speed with 4.1 diff and 3.9 for thruxton. 5speed A standardbox will allmost make 5th gear usless as it's a big jump for 85 hp from 4th to 5th and will need a 4.4 diff. 5 speed from bhg with thier little tricks will still require a 4.1 or 4.4 diff. thir 5th gear is a closer ratio to 4th apparantly from a transit so it complies with the standard gears rule in the regs.
there is also the original 4 speed out of the escort witch is the smallest and lightest but can be the weak link in reliabilaty.
probably dosent help you decide but know you have a choise of 4

escort 4 speed
type 9 4 speed
type 9 5 speed
type 9 5 speed by bhg

hope this sort of helps. matt

for got about clutch. standard replacement will be fine
