B*starding rust

I've lost all my knuckles trying to take apart a pair of Cortina hubs, calipers etc. Apart from VD40 & patience is there a missing remedy I don't know about?

1/2" drive sockets, a proper breaker bar and a rubber mallet.

Thats how I got my Mk3 ones apart.

Next best way is an impact driver (has exactly the same effect).

Give all the bolt heads a sharp tap with a hammer to break the locktite free.

If that fails its out with the blow torch and apply some heat to the offending items.

Not trying to be patronising but you are not trying to hammer the tapered fittings (TRE and balljoint) through the respective holes, you need to strike the upright casting to get these out at 90 degrees to the taper with another hammer behind.

With a rubber hammer I suspect you will hit things until your wrist falls off and get knowhere !

Regards Mark

Tiser (the drink) is brilliant for losening up rusty bolts - much better than coke. Found this out when I had to remove the exhaust manifold from a Cessna 150, after snapping a stud the mechanic in the hanger next door suggested it. splash it on, have a brew or two then squeak out they came.

Been told its something to do with the acid in it, eats the rust (iron oxide) but not the metal. pretty funky stuff

Few hours of electrolysis and it'll fall apart.

You require a vice and a suitable lenght of bar to slip over a T bar and socket. Worked fine with my granada jobbies, but took most/all of my effort. And I'm an ex-rugby playing 6' 3". ie an absolute fook load of effort.

If you use the right tools it shouldn't be a problem.

fizzy drinks contain carbonic acid. It undisolves to form carbon dioxide bubbles which make up the fizz. Do you think that environmentallists who caomplain about CO2 emissions from cars drink fizzy drinks?

I had to use a vice attached to a bench which was bolted to a wall. I used a socket with a 500mm long bar, over which I slipped a 2 metre scaffold pole. It still took all my weight to undo the nuts and they weren't rusted.

Good luck.

everyone talks about using WD40 - it's never loosened anything for me. I use a propper dismanteling lubricant like Plus Gas - it works much better.

A can of coke on a slipping clutch always got us out of a whole in the middle of a race weekend, especially good if the plates have become contaminated with oil from a leaky seal or the like,

Potent stuff, guess you have all tried the 2p in a cup thing ?

If you really want a scare, put a bit of meat in some coke, leave it overnight and see what happens.

Then think what it must do to you inners.

On the plus side if you ever put a steak in it for 15 mins, wash it off and cook it, its the most tender meat you'll have in your life.

Success!

They are in pretty bits now. Not much left of the original pads, they were run right down to the metal!
