network switch
Ok, i currently have an ADSL Router for the 3 PC's in the house. They are all plugged into the back of the router.
Today i received my BT Home hub thingy which only has 2 outputs for the hetwork cables. When ordering i told the guy at BT that i had 4 PC's
that i wanted to connect to it and he said yeah thats fine so i need a switch or splitter. Do such things exist and what is their proper
name?

As you probably need to go out and buy something, probably a switch (hub), you could consider buying wifi cards instead as isnt the BT hub a wifi hub.
That way youre not limited by whatever swicth you buy. Wifi will be slower transfer of data however

Hi,
What you need is a switch or a hub (you might struggle to find a hub these days tho). Your current router might run as just a switch, but they tend to
do other stuff as well (like DHCP), which might conflict with your home hub widget....
Anything in this category should do you fine...

You'll want one which can handle auto-crossover, so that it doesn't get confused when connected to your home hub, or you'll need a
crossover cable instead of a normal patch lead.

Really don't want to go wifi as it reduces the speed (as you say) so thats out. I'm on the phone to BT right now so i'll let you
know what's what.

Yep, i was lied to!!
Looks like i'll either have to get a splitter or keep the router i have.
They have just told me that i will still have the faster broadband service so i may just keep the old router plugged in for now.

A network switch would be about a tenner, eg this on ebay

If you found one to pick up then even cheaper.
Why wouldn't you just keep your existing adsl router anyway??

I have just read the bumff and when you plug the hub in for the 1st time the server thingy at BT spends an hour testing the line to get the
fastest connection. Not sure if it's worth it though.
I'm going to get a switch and set it all up. MAy as well cos the hub does look nice!!  What a pansy!!

I might be missing something here but why can't you just plug the two together?? disconnect your old router from the wall and turn off dhcp if
its on and it should just function as a switch - provided one of the two units has an 'uplink' port (otherwise you would just need a
crossover cable which costs a few pounds from maplin) then as far as i can tell they should just work!
