Ultima chassis mods

A very interesting link regarding mods to the Ultima chassis

http://www.ultimav12.ca/

He's right as well. The Ultima with roof 3300 and without probably
2000 (approx).

The Ultima chassis is actually within striking distance of a
reasonably well designed ladder frame.

The problem is that big wide enginebay.

Note from the site that adding an X brace to the top of the engine bay and a frame work across the bottom (the alloy panel is probably irrelevant to the stiffness) give big gains.

Basically these two mods remove most of the flex in the rear of the frame.

Adding a fancy floor of honeycombe does little. No surprises there. Welded in steel is probably the best floor compromise at home build level as it is a lot less prone to
dropping out like a riveted floor can sometimes do and does add to other, important, structural issues.

Bracing the frames over the transaxle help. Again no surprises. This is actually the first thing I'd do to an Ultima chassis. This mod also helps locate the rear suspension better , one side to the other.

The big puzzle for me is the difference that little tube at the front makes. I'll have to have a think about this. It's got me interested.

The stiffness of the Ultima is out. I thought it wasn't much better than a decent seven type chassis but never dared say because I didn't think anyone would believe me.

Purely from a structural analysis point of view, try to get a look under the underside of the new Audi A4 cabriolet.

There are 2 what only can be described as farmers fence straps bolted underneath. they are about 1.5" by 3/8" wrought iron bar and run from the inner front subframe mounts, bolted regularly right up to the rear of the boot floor (almost the length of the car). I took them off to replace the exhaust after a rear end shunt and the front doors wont open without them!

Vorsprung durcht technik - more like agricultural bodge technik - I am totally disgusted with the brand - absolutely primitave

I any of us presented a car like this for the SVA we would be told to wee off and stick to making wheel barrows!!

Yeah, I thought it was "Humble" too. Just shows you how you could get into trouble with a misunderstanding.

eg. Your car is crap IMHO could have an important difference depending on whether it is "Humble" or "Honest" although I guess you'll get a smack in the mouth either way...

Cheers,
Craig.

Take a look at http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Campus/4642/irchat.html for most of the common ones. There is at least one incorrect on there though, we all know that FUBAR does not stand for "Fed Up Beyond All Recognition". The last four words are correct though.

My favorite is SNAFU
