vauxhall gearbox options
Hi all,
I've been trying to decide what route to go down for a rwd gearbox on my VX 2ltr Xe.
I've done my homework and discovered the following 3 options:
1.) Manta (400/j-series, 1800) getrag gearbox (alloy)
2.) Carlton 1800 gearbox (alloy?)
3.) Alloy bellhousing adapter to ford type 9
My questions are as follows:
a.) Is the carlton box alloy?
b.) What power/torque can these boxes cope with? (I'll be running 200-220bhp)
c.) Are there any other options?
d.) Do the boxes all fit in the trany tunnel without mod'ing it?
I know I can get an adapter plate from Yukspeed for £140, though have found very little info on the web for the carlton or manta box. Anyone know what
the going rates for these or where to find them?
Cheers,
Ned.

Im using that engine too and a type 9 box with a bellhousing from yukspeed. aswell as the bellhousing (£140) youll also need a different clutch plate
to suit the ford splines, a different release bearing a different fork to move the clutch a spiggot bearing and a different sump. I got all of mine
from yuk and it was very reasonably priced. He also reccomended uprating the con rod bolts which were £68 i think.

Andrew,
thanks for your reply, I think the type 9 will be the way i go. I spoke to a wes****ld owner recently who I'm buying some bits off, he recons a
standard type 9 will fall to bits, (synchro on 2nd goes with a tuned vx xe) so will need a quaiffe kit. I'm not convinced on the alternatives as
they might not be strong enough and aren't as common/readily available for parts.
I've seen yukspeeds ads and site, they seem very competitive prices. I am definately going arp bolts as am planning overbore, high compression
pistons etc (see my website for propsed engine spec)
cheers,
Andrew.

Im not certain but i think the 2wd mt75 gearbox is a stronger alternative and i think it will go on the same bellhousing but if you can afford the
quaife kit then that would obviously be better.

Andrew,
the mt75 has an integral bellhousing so as far as I'm aware won't come close to fitting.

I'm sure I saw an mt75 without bell housing at stoneleigh.
I might be making it up though!

the 3lt straight six engins in the carlton and senator are 174bhp for the 12v and 201bhp for the 24v.
i have seen carltons with 300bhp on the standard box

omega R25 or R30 box will bolt straight on, and come with up to 208bhp strapped to them as std.
PPC magazine recently fitted one to a mk2 escort and commented on it not sticking out anywhere important so they didnt have to mod the tunnel.

Hi Best option for strength V weight V ratio's Etc Etc is to fit a strait cut quaife or tranex type 9 or 4speed box with ratios that are more
suitable. Any of the STD fitment boxes do not have ratios that are right and will always feel like a compromise.
A good S/H Quaife or Tranex should not be more than £500. And once in the job is done with the strength issues sorted.
Have been having this very conversation with a Westfield customer who has just broke the 1800 manta box.
ps if any one has a spare 1800 manta box going he is looking for one as a temporary fit to keep the car running till the full conversion is done. U2U
me if one available. Also add going in to wanted section.
Cheers Matt

gsi chappie, the Carlton 3.0 boxes are no good, different bellhousing pattern, though the Monza 5 speed with detachable bellhousing can be made to fit
using a cut down manta 1800 box as a bellhousing, done it, wouldn't do it again as there os a much better option now;
I have just finished fitting a 1997 Omega 3.0 "R25-R28" gearbox to an XE turbo, and yep, it bolts straight on, if only the clutch were
that easy LOL!!
Use the std XE clutch of whatever your choice of "upratedness" and then you need to keep the omega concentric release mechanism, but
spacer it out approx 25mm (I did 24mm) from its original mount, so it reaches the XE clutch, as the omegas all have bloody dual mass flywheels!!
its a big gearbox but it is pretty tough and they sell for around £60-£100

ooooh, PS the input spline on it is same as manta 1800 i.e. 14 spline, so you need vauxhall cav/calibra turbo friction plate (to suit F25 box) which
is 14 spline as std instead of the fine spline on the F20 boxes etc.

RB25??
I assume you mean the R25-R28 Omega box?
If so then the one in the kadett is still ok after 300 miles and two drag racing events of around 10 runs each.
Each manta box only lasted 5 runs before it was shrieking so loudly you really didn't dare drive it on the road, and that was from freshly
rebuilt, not a scrapyard box.
Only time will tell, but it is coping with 385hp well at the moment

I've seen the VX, its got a huge turbo with nitros. Like all cars NS Devs worked on, I've refused to go in it.
