HELP!! with auto gearbox
Took the wife out for a meal tonight and from the off the auto gearbox in my VW Sharan was stuck in 3rd gear. I stopped in a lay by and turned the car
off and started again. I could get park, neutral and reverse but only 3rd gear in Drive. Got to the restraunt, ate, drank and came out and set off.
The gearbox was having trouble in drive deciding which gear to go in but after 3 mins on the road it seemed to sort itself out and is fine now (touch
wood) I have a trip tronic selector thingy and when going to the restraunt it was still only able to give me 3rd gear but on the way home was fine.
Any ideas ir is it ££££kaching time
I have spent over £1500 in the last 6 months on this damn car with one thing after another going wrong and we can't afford a new car for another
5 years (don't ask... something to do with mortgages and school fees )

If you've got the DSG gearbox the ecu kicks into "get you home" mode if it detects a problem, i.e. 3rd gear only. You also get the
gear indicator display flashing and chiming.
DSG is fabulous most of the time but is troubled with intermittent faults. There have been a few software upgrades since it was introduced.
If the DSG system recorded a fault code your garage should find it and then fingers crossed there's a software fix.
...based on experience with my DSG

... if they can't find a fault code:
- a specialist might be able to. or
- it might be a mechanical fault
which begins to get expensive.
Have you got a warranty?

My Car started doing something similar, I changed the fluid twice (to get the old rubbish out the torque convertor, second change after a week) which
improved the gear change, then started to unplug and plug everthing up, 30k miles later and its still fine.

Even though they come with the 1.9 TDI Volkswagen engine ? (although not in this case)
Even Sharans and Alhambras have the VW engine.
Is it a Ford, a VW or a Seat ?............
