Replace a ford KA clutch
The clutch went on my Ka the other day and i was contemplating doing it myself. I'm pretty competant around a car and have swapped engines,
replaced head gaskets ect...
Is it do-able or should i leave this one for the garage.
It's the 1.3 enduro engine on an 98 plate.

Iv never changed a clutch before but i beleive its fairly easy and the KA is a pretty simple car
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Whilst it might be simple, having looked on our feista (with the same engine) the trouble might be getting access to it.. Would'nt mind knowing
how to do this job myself as well, since our clutch is the original, and at 65K has got to be on it's last legs!

The Ka looks simple but there is alot of stuff crammed into that engine bay for its size so working around it all.
Bumper and wheels off.
Gearlinkage off - 2 bolts
Exhaust dropped at front
Battery out of its tray
Clutch fluid pipe removed
Bottom ball joints removed from hub carrier.
Undo the cv boot clips.
Swing the hub carriers out to pop the shaft tripode out.
Blocks under sump
Unbolt the box from the engine
Support the box with a jack
Unbolt the middle bolt from the rear engine mount
Undo the two nuts from the front passenger side mount.
Move the box out or clear of the engine and get access to the clutch.
Put it all back in and bleed the clutch fluid pipe.
This is a rough idea of what to do!
You could always put an RS Turbo engine back in there, its pretty simple to do lol

Depending on the driving done you might be surprised how long a modern clutch lasts. Mines on 88ish k, still original. Its getting a bit long in the
tooth but it works. I think i'll get 90 to 95k out of it. Just got to decide then if its worth replacing the clutch or scrapping the car (clutch
at a garage is around 500 quid for the Astra) cars not worth that much more

Fingers crossed mark, you never know the clutch might outlast the engine!...

thanks SyKaTurbo, I've had a little look under the car and have a rough idea on how it's done. 44qiud +vat for the kit and 3-4hours work.
Looks like i'll not be going for that birthday drink tonight but as long as i get to watch the rugby i'll be happy.
Bluemoon i'll let you know how i get on. Mines on 120k and just went.

I got a small local garage to do my clutch on my 106 (good garage that I know & trust - the guy used to prep his own rally cars) but I got 90k out
of it before then, and it was only just starting to slip a little
cost me his time: ~£110 (I'd bought the clutch kit already for £70)
I would have done it myself, but then I wouldn't have had any time left for the dax

Ok i can confirm that a KA clutch is a simple enough task and i managed it on my own. Double check all your earth wires, sensors and speedo is
disconected before pulling it apart. Battery tray, air box need moving out the way and the drive shafts are removed from the box side. Just pull the
CV boots off.
Took me 4hours on my own.
God i'm good.
Cost me 44quid + VAT.

I've never done a Ka clutch but I've done a couple of Escorts and Fiestas and they are not too difficult. Does that mean I'm good as
well?

A simple enough job. If you want a challenge, try doing an MG TF clutch on your drive, knowing you need the car to go on holiday to Southern France in
3 days!
Now THAT was a challenge - talk about pressure!
Took about 8 hours total - and as it turned out, the clutch was fine, it was the actuating lever which had siezed in the bellhousing!

Hi is it defo the clutch. I know a friends garrage is always having to replace the hydrualic cyls on the later fiesta's and ka's. Which is
a verry easy job i belive.
