Zetec Water Pump Rotation

Hi!,
I think I read somewhere that the phase 3 zetec water pump runs anticlockwise and yet the earlier zetec ran clockwise. Anyone know if this is the case plus which pump I need to buy to get the pump to run clockwise if in fact I have it the correct way round?

Yep, my phase 3 1.8 ex Focus motor, has the pump spining anti clock, I dont think there is a clockwise version for the 3, its totally different to the phase 1 & 2, but hope someone proves me wrong it would mean I can simplify my belt arrangement.
Rgds.
Pete.

Escort zetec is phase 1 & 2, Phase 3 is completely different, the water pump is offset to the right when you're facing the engine:
If the Escort impeller will fit the Ph 3, we might be in with a shout at CW rotation.

All 2l mondeo zetecs pumps are designed to run anticlockwise viewed from in front of the engine(apart from the usa one). 1.8 silvertop escort water pumps are designed to run clockwise and bolt straight on to 2l silvertops. Get the 1.8's ribbed pulley as well. Phase 3 or blacktop zetecs can use the usa pump or more usually an idler-pulley fitted above and to the right (viewed from in front of the engine) of the pump pulley so the pump can be driven anticlockwise from the back of the belt.

Silvertop/phase1/2:
-escort1.6/1.8: clockwise metal impeller
-mondeo1.6/1.8/2.0: anti clockwise plastic impeller interchangeable with the escort unit

Blacktop/phase3: anti-clockwise and complete different pump then the silvertop, so not interchangeable
You'll need a idler pulley to get this one working.

Maybe that in the US a different one exists, but certainly not in the EU.

Here's a example on how to do it on a blacktop/phase3 zetec:

black top

Just to let you all know my engine is a black top with a silver top sump, oil pump, oil pick up,cam cover,inlet/exhaust manifolds and a home made idler bearing. So they are not so different. The main difference is that the cam followers are solid shimmed,as the hydralic followers tend to fail at high revs, hope this has helped.

Now I'm really interested, the Ph2 sump can be fitted? if I can get rid of the intermediate sump I wouldn't need to mod the suspension cross member on the MGB, any more details / pics on what you've done?

That water pump converts mondeo zetecs to kit car friendly rotation. You will need the pulley as well. The 'wrong' rotation mondeo/focus pumps have an outlet that angles down about 30 degrees and about 20 degrees back toward the flywheel end of the engine. The correct escort pump outlet angles down about 30 deg but at right angles to the side of the engine. ie parallel to the front face of the engine.

Werner, doesn't the arrangement you show turn the alternator in the 'wrong' direction? Does that work OK or do you have to fit a honda alternator or something.

The water pump still works quite happily when turned in the wrong direction as it is a centrifugal pump, not a screw pump, so don't worry too much about it. It's probably slightly less effective, but mine is running the wrong way and still managing to keep a ~200bhp silvertop Zetec turbo cool with seeming ease.

Lots of people on the Westfield forum are running them the wrong way with no ill-effects as well.

Tom

I think that it's a daihatsu charade alternator. It's not mine you know, just a picture i came across searching the net for zetec info. And for most alternators direction doesn't matter as it's a AC generator with a rectifier mounted to it to make it around 14Vdc
