Robinhood rebuild

As there isnt a RH section I thought Id post here. Nothing mad, just spent the last few months rebuilding parts of the car after the propshaft let go on me and made a bit of a mess. Took the opportunity (and the winter months) to redo a lot of stuff.

Car as it started out (before I even bought it). Its a MK2 robinhood with a full stainless monocoque tub, front inboard suspension and sierra rear end (beam, diff holder, trailing arms, driveshafts, LSD etc).



Car as I bought it (June07):



Prev owner had done a lot of engine work including going out to 2.1, rally cam, twin weber 40s, RS2000 sump, LSD, electronic ignition etc.

Even so I had to rework a LOT of stuff in the first few months including a totally redone dash, grp seats, some engine work etc etc. Car was chucking oil everywhere so fitted breathers and a tank etc. worked well enough.

took it to its first trackday in Aug07. Had such fun in it!



Then decided to repsray it as the bodywork was in bad condition especially as I was removing the big scoopy wings. Used 6 cans of kawasaki green aerosols lol. Also dropped to 15" wheels for more oomph as well as some other mods. cycle wings, OMP steering wheel and a carbon dash/rear panel being the best ones.







Back to the track in Oct07, car going well but having a lot of oil chucking problems. got through the day tho and had a lot of fun.



Then a few days later was on the local motorway (coming off at a sliproad) and the prop donut exploded (didnt even know it had one) mangling the transmission tunnel and almost my leg into the bargain! Decided to take the car off the road for the winter and sort it out, as well as do a few small mods.





So during the winter I done some mods:

body:
- resprayed the rear arches, bonnet and nosecone in kawasaki green (proper 2pack job this time)
- trimmed the tub and scuttle in black vinyl
- fitted carbonmods aero cycle wings
- fitted 13" karmona wheels painted black with gold flecks. 195/45/13 tyres.
- fitted LED rear lights
- fitted carbon SPS wing mirrors

running gear:
- new prop with UJs at both ends
- patched up tranmission tunnel
- fitted carbon top panel for tunnel
- fitted poly diff mount
- fitted poly beam bushes (uses sierra rear beam)
- fitted new front bottom arms (sierra), upper balljoints (transit) and track rod ends (sierra). used poly bushes for ARB to bottom arm joints.
- fitted new CV boot as old one split
- goodridge brake hoses fitted all round
- new front to rear brake pipe fitted

engine:
- fitted twin DHLA 45s on a long 6" manifold. new trumpets/linkage/twin cables etc.
- fitted a mocal catchtank
- fitted a race battery (odyssey)
- fitted a new 4branch (4 into 1) and silencer

some pics of the finished product. still a few small jobs to sort out but its off to get the carbs etc all setup and running 100% as thats the main thing right now!

not boring at all. Glad you did post the pics of the prop damage. Perhaps that will make some on here take the risk seriously for a change.

Looks far nicer fully painted, smart.

WOW....It is possible to make a RH look like a decent car...

Shame mine doesnt

What springs/shocks are you using at the back? I have the standard sierra ones, and it looks like the car is on hydraulics

yeah std sierra ones, cant really go any lower or the big beam mount will be scraping the floor!

I found a set of koni adj sierra shocks that are going on tho might help to stiffen it up a bit.

Sorry to hijack your thread...

Do you have any photos of your rear shock mounting?


With the standard sierra shocks on mine the back of the car rides really high and is just stupidly springy...

My prop tunnel is going to be inch thick armoured plating after seeing that!

because mine is a monocoque the mounts are different, but my springs have little clamps on them to compress them.

you should consider fitting coilovers to the rear, would be a nice job and a lot easier for you than me.

You've certainly put some effort into it.

The one thing I'd do differently is to have a taller roll bar or lower seats!!

Pablo's car is an earlier variant of a Robin Hood which used a stainless Monococque construction rather than the tube frame of the 2b.

Consequently the Robin Hood series 7/3a cars do not have the same set of problems as the 2b (i.e. High rear end!)

Anyone know what the common fix is for the shoddy rear end on the 2b?

It needs to be a good 3-4" lower unloaded and one hell of a lot harder...

The front end is nice and sport, the back end is like a blemange...

What about getting a set of the lowering springs the chavs use in their corsas/novas/106/saxos?

can cause havoc with the shocks but if you are sensible the can be pretty good....

I cant comment on suspention set up, but it certainly looks far nicer in the final pictures (full painted in to two colours) than any of the earlier ones. Never been a fan of much crome/stainless.

Makes you thing about the propshaft too tho.

Bloke at our local garage was called out to a lorry that had suffered a failed propshaft.
- Got in the cab and turn the igntion on, first thing he noticed was the radio was at max. Bloke had been turning up for the last hour to drown out the increasingly loud noise of the thing shaking itself to bits.
- Had come right though the floor on the passenger side wiping anything in its path before coming against the central chassis member.

Good job on th S7 Pablo.
I will be putting the steel work around the prop flange area this week, pity i did not do it while the engine and box were out, i could have put it on the inside.

What thickness would be worth putting on?

I was reading the 'book' I bought recently and in the racing mods section an extra diagonal is required to protect against this

Looks bloody scary

lol if I get the right money for it Ill upgrade to a BEC but only if....

shall be enjoying it up until then!

although Im tempted to stick a ZX12 lump in it, shoul haul its lardy arse about ok
