Phase 3 zetec sensor

Hi All, what is this sensor on the ph3 zetec? looks like its in a blank hole, knock sensor? can I just leave it out?

Building: Daimler 2.5 Hemi V8 to put in a ????

It looks like a cylinder head temp sensor. It measures the casting temp rather than the coolant. I would think it is needed if you are running the standard ecu.
