This weekend's project...

When I'm driving along I want to be able to start, stop and mark my MegaJolt logs without having to muck about with the laptop keyboard - not a good thing to do when you are supposed to be concentrating on your driving!

Realising that I could plug another keyboard device into the laptop, and that a keyboard can be hacked about, I did some googling and came up with a 3-key device. This has keys for F5, Esc and Space - a.k.a. Start, Stop and Mark the log. Details of keyboard hacking can be found here - it's very easy - if you can build a MegaJolt then this is child's play.

It was really cheap - the keyboard was free from the office as it had some keys missing, I had an ali box sitting in my cupboard, and the switches cost £5. They could have been cheaper, but I liked the look of these!

All I want now is some secure way to put it on the transmission tunnel and it'll be ready for use.

or - the locost option.... tell the wife/kid to sit in the passenger seat and press the buttons when told!

But seriously - like the idea may have to do something like that myself

And, before anyone says it, the idea about putting it on the steering wheel had ocurred to me! (then sanity took over...)

1337 -> LEET -> Elite

l33t is teh suck!

WASD are used by a lot of games for keyboard movement as they form an upside down T.

instead of getting a keyboard, and hacking it to pieces, why not just buy a numeric keypad, and remap the keys to do what you want

Various reasons

1. The major components were free, or spare, only the switches were bought (I didn't have to).

2. I wanted just 3 buttons - start, stop and mark - so that I didn't need to look at the box while driving.

What you suggest would probably work, but it wasn't what I wanted.
