two stroke diesel

a chap I know in the agricultural contracting line of work has just bought an old american built machine powered by a v6 detroit diesel.

Had a look at it the other day and was amazed to discover the blindingly obvious to anyone familiar with them, they are two stroke, and rev like you wouldn't believe!!

Why are two stroke diesels out of fashion in mobile stuff???

Call me daft but for me its worth it just for the noise, it sounded AWESOME!!!

here's a clip I found on youtube of a wagon with the same engine.

detroit diesel noise!

The old Commer TS3 ? used a two stroke diesel IIRC it had two pistons in the same bore?

The Commer TS3 two stroke diesel of 60/70's vintage was recently tested along with current trucks and was found to meet many of the current emissions standards and was very nearly as economic! Not bad for a 1950's design.

In case you are wondering it has 3 cylinders and six pistons (2 in each cylinder), it is piston ported (no valves) and is supercharged!

A similar engine was used in some German Junkers bombers during WW2.

My favourite engine of all time is a 2-stroke diesel, the Napier Deltic , its a bit heavy and complex for a seven though....

We had a pair of them in HMS Bickington, exhausts used to catch fire every morning due to piston slap

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

there was a pair in a scrap yard I was at a few weeks back. They are huge

They looked turbocharged ?

I was going to look them up but forgot all about them.

are you talking bout the detroit?

It was a bit like that with me, I had heard of them, but never considered them, until I saw this one.

Yep, they are either turbo or supercharged, they have to be to scavenge properly, won't really run without a blower of some sort.

I have to say they make so much sense, 4 strokes seem daft.

Look on youtube and you can find a detroit diesel dragster running 8 sec 1/4's.

I will have to go and have another look at the one in the limespreader (that's the agricultural vehicle I was on about)

Its actually not the v6, its twin turbo v8, but no idea how much power.

They actually made a twin turbo v12 2 stroke too..............................

Wonder how long the 0.5 capacity rule for diesels would last if people started using them for hillclimbing

Worked a Terex TS24 motorscraper when I was younger, which ran two detroit V8 motors front and rear, mental noise and power
Can't remember them being overly smokey either, even under load

How about this for a 2 stroke diesel?

Two Stroke Diesel

more than 50% efficiency, so almost theoretically perfect and 100,000 BHP at 102 RPM.

Old Foden lorries used a two stroke diesel and the one that used to pick up from the steel firm I worked for was really loud, you could hear it coming down the bypass 5 minutes before it pulled into the yard.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
