Question for a welder!
Hi, I tried to weld an R1 can onto my S/S exhaust pipe, and as you can see from the attached picture it definately didn't work, the weld seems to
have cristalised. I have welded many S/S items in the past and never had a problem, well at least not like this. Any idea's why it should
happen??????? Cheers Ray.

Is an R1 can titanium?
(Titanium gives off brilliant white sparks if touched with a grinder.)

Well if it is Titanium, (although must say it "looks" like S/S), can it be welded, and if so how? Ray

Is an R1 can titanium?
Early R1 Cans (4XV) are stainless with a carbon sleeve, and then changed to titanium sleeves & pipework 2000-2001 (5JJ)

I have chopped two R1 cans now, both stainless.
Are you using TIG ? For a proper job you should backgas but as its thick I never bothered and mine have both been fine.
If you drill the rivits and knock off the ali cover the tube is welded to a mild steel case.
nb/ Titanium is just the end cap on a GSXR can, they do not make these out of this stuff as its expensive, just have little finishers... then call it
a Titanium can !

On A 5JJ exhaust can only the top end cap below the ali cover is mild steel (tailpipe end), the bottom one is titanium just like the pipework

As Paul G said, unfortunately NO
Titanium cannot be fusion welded to stainless steel.

What about soildering them together that should work? but you'l need to slip one inside the othwer a bit and I'd say use silver soilder
too which is expensive

Split the pipe, insert a sleve, and two Jubilee Clips (or similar) to secure.
What else can you do if it cant be welded?

Have hacked one can about and I think I have the solution. I have drilled out the rivets, removed the end cap. Ground away the tail pipe completely,
and drilled out the rivets that hold the titanium plate to the steel inner. I am now going to make a stainless plate that will rivet back into the six
holes with the piece of S/S pipe welded to that, jobs a good un! (hopefully) :-) Cheers Ray
