Gear indicators

How do gear indicators work?

Im thinking about getting one for my new bike (a zxr400) as i like to know what gear im in, but havent got a clue how they work?

Are they easy to fit?

Cheers Guys

there are 2 Major types:

type 1 compares wheel speed with the engine speed and figures out the ratio, and hence what gear your in.

Type 2 is a multi-contact switch which bolts over the end of the selector drum. this type knows exactly what gear your in at anytime.

Its fairly obvious that type 2 is better as its a direct indication of what gear your in and will work even when the bike is not moving/running - however im not sure if its compatible wth the zxr400 gearbox.

i would recommend using one on a zxr400, there a fantastic bike but the power band is narrow.

Ye ive only had it a few days and absolutly love it to bits! (even though its restricted)

I've made one using a 16F84 PIC using microswitches on the gear shift stick.

It's free....
