thunderace - 20/11/08 at 06:17 PM

should all new cars sold in the uk have speedlimiters set at 70mph max.

blakep82 - 20/11/08 at 06:18 PM

not a chance.
i think it would be dangerous

Richard Quinn - 20/11/08 at 06:21 PM

How very dare you!!

blakep82 - 20/11/08 at 06:23 PM

who's the 2 people saying yes?!

smart51 - 20/11/08 at 06:23 PM

If 90 MPH is a very bad thing then why not set them at 89?

The problem with setting them at 70 is that 70 MPH in one car may only be 60 in another. Even your own car, it depends on tyre wear and pressure, even tyre brand.

A speed limiter to stop you doing 140 down the motorway (or the high street) is perhaps a good thing. Set the speed limiter above the max speed to allow people to keep up with traffic.

graememk - 20/11/08 at 06:26 PM

why has the uk just become a communist country ?

do as your told or be shot ?

i for one will keep speeding untill they take my licence away, and when that happends i'll pretend i'm polish.

blakep82 - 20/11/08 at 06:27 PM

^could be argued that if all cars had limiters at 70 (proper 70, not speedo 70) then then everyone could only go the same speed anyway.

there are times when you need the extra speed to get out a dangerous situation.

or for example you're on a 2 lane mototrway side by side with another car, police come up behind you wanting to to go past. what can you do?

dubstar_04 - 20/11/08 at 06:28 PM

Sometimes you need a bit more oomph to over take.

BMW should just make sure that the indicators work on their cars!!

I didn't think BMW installed them.

one of mine fell out

don't use them anyways

Hellfire - 20/11/08 at 06:31 PM

Not all UK cars spend their life on UK roads. Personally I don't think there's a market for vehicles that are limited to 70 mph. Quite the opposite.

MikeR - 20/11/08 at 06:32 PM

Ah, so its ok to break the law ..........

right then, i'll go and burgle your shop!

or is it a case of its ok for you to break the law but not for anyone else????

The issue we've got here is we have laws that we don't believe are appropriate or shouldn't apply. Some people decide to flout these laws more than others.

Perhaps we should have a revised system. The speed limit is 30mph, you are allowed to do up to 33mph. Every MPH above 33 is a 30 pound fine and ever 3 mph is a point on your license.

So 33mph = ok (can you trust your speedo, better do 30mph to be safe)

35mph = 60 pounds fine

36mph = 90 pounds fine and point on your license.

40mph = 210 pounds fine + 2 points.

Use the money 'made' to hire speed police. The more people caught, the more police we get, the less people caught hte more lose their jobs (same principle of life cycles with foxes and rabbits).

Also allow speed police on the motorway. For a conviction to be held the police must have video evidence of you (so no faking evidence).

Discuss

blakep82 - 20/11/08 at 06:37 PM

i've seen the police 'legally' break trafic laws plenty of times in the last week.

once was putting on the blue lights at a junction to go round a corner on a red light, then turned them off straight away after when coming out the police station

another time is hard to explain, but involves a set of traffic lights outside a firestation (1 set of lights with 2 white lines - one before the fire station one after at a T junction), and a turn left lane with a green light before the main lanes.
police came up behind me, went into the turn left lane when the light went green, pulled back into the red light just ahead of me and then pulled into the police station. I'd never have been allowed to get away with that

anyway, thats not the point...

seconded.

As mentioned by someone else, what about the possibility of someone using their car on private land such as a race track, where it is perfectly legal to do whatever speed you're capable of (I hear these 'track days' are increasingly popular? )

And what if you go to another country with your car, why should you still be stuck doing 70 if they don't have such limits?

And then there's the whole, it's my f*****g car and I'm perfectly capable of choosing how fast to drive all on my own, and of my own volition choose whether to obey the speed limit and the law, or not to obey.

The more choice and responsibility taken away from individuals the less this people will be capable of shouldering responsibility. I see more restrictions on speed and other aspects of driving leading to driving becoming a less and less involving activity, and one which people think they can do other things at the same time as - using the phone or whatever - and they will pay less attention and cause and be involved in more and more accidents.

end rant, sorry about that! But I'm sure there are many accidents that occur these days because it is so easy to drive that people don't pay attention to what they're doing. Back to non power assisted steering and non servo assisted brakes please.

graememk - 20/11/08 at 06:50 PM

is MikeR a preist ?

bet he's never broken the law by speeding ever.....

antonio - 20/11/08 at 06:51 PM

guys,
uk may be more strict as far as speed limits are concerned, but belive me, you are still very lucky to be able to drive a car you've built and still be able to drive them quite fast.
i've seen a lot more scamera on uk roads these last 3 years, but they are still less than france... this years only, 100 000 people were banned from driving. wanna know what a f****** country is, move in france!

zzr1100rick2 - 20/11/08 at 07:09 PM

Yes cars should be limited to 70mph
and bikes should be unlimited hehe

caber - 20/11/08 at 07:28 PM

Deffo no on the limiters. But many countries have sound devices that go bing every second when over the national limit. Pretty much all Middle East countries have them also in Singapore. They do not stop you exceeding the limit but sure lets you know when you are exceeding the limit. I just cannot see any reason why such nagging devices are not mandatory in the UK, if you don't want it then you can always disconnect it if you can figure out the wiring in a modern car

blakep82 - 20/11/08 at 07:32 PM

BMWs have had that as an option since at least the mid 90s.
my sister has a merc, and its got an actual limiter that you can set to whatever speed you want, which is nice

A speedo does this, doesn't it?

Nope, i've been caught. I was speeding, my own fault. hold my hand up. can't complain. paid the fine.

Since i've done my best to be a good boy and stick to the speed limit for the majority of the time. If i manage to be a good boy for a few more weeks i can send my license off and get a new one with no points on it at all!

YQUSTA - 20/11/08 at 08:53 PM

If any one in power was that bothered about road safety all cars would be fitted with limiters which would work by transmitting from the sign posts around our country limitting the car to said post's speed.

The reason this isn't done is they wouldn't get any cash from it, which in my opinion is all they care about.

Just look at our driving test its a joke no skid pan for 1 and you car pass your test jump in a super car and go kill people.

rant over

on my tin top, my speedometer used to read +7 miles on 80mph according to my GPS.

Actual speedo
73 80

Recently, i changed wheels and tyres from a 175/60/14 to a 195/50/15

My speedo only reads 4 miles more than the actual. I do not spped anymore unless i need to. Trying to keep the cost of petrol down and only hammer it when needed.

The most annoying is down the motorway when i am doing 60 - 65 mph behind a lorry doing 56 and i cannot overtake as cars on the midle lane do 80+

A system that read's the cars speed and keep a log would be nice. This could be checked on every MOT and i the car has been speeding over a long periods of time, the police should be informed.

AdrianH - 20/11/08 at 11:20 PM

Any mechanical style limiters would not work, setting a max speed between 70 to 80 mph would not stop the pillxxxs from doing 40 to 50 in a 30 mph built up zone, screeching tyres and skid turns as witnessed today in a built up area.

We can all fit Tom toms or similar now if we want to be told the legal road speed and true speed we are travelling, but I like the flashing signs that indicate speed, that is enough for me to control my speed rather then see the yellow box at road side.

It would be nice if the local councils or whoever, made the rules easier to organise more speed style events to take place at car parks, motorway service areas or industrial estates at weekends. That way the custom crowd or power boys could strut their stuff but keep it controlled. Back that up with higher penalties on normal built up roads to keep it off the streets.

Yes I have been done for speeding in the past, and also been hit by a speeding vehicle, it hurts. I think that nobody plans to loose control of their car and have an accident, we need subtle reminders rather then big brother with a big stick.

Speed doesn't kill, hitting things does or being hit.

If they want to bring accident numbers down, start prosecuting other road users who have THE SAME responsibilities as car drivers - that includes pedestrians, cyclists, horses etc etc.

I think they should do away with the points system and replace it with a steepening fine curve based on earnings (gross incl bonuses/dividends).

Standard tarif based on national average wage and could be weighted according to amount over limit (starting at say 10%+3mph over limit and type of road (more weighting for speeding outside school than on a motorway sort of thing).

First fine would be say £60 for minor transgression, outside school 50% weighted so £90. Assuming national average salary is £25k, fine amounts to 0.24%.

If you earn £200,000, then you'd pay £480, second offence would be same fine, plus 1st fine, so rich chap pays nearly a grand for second offence, £2000 for 3rd, £4000 for 4th. All on a rolling 3 year period, but with some proviso for stonger deterent if say 3 offences committed in a v short time.

Other road users should be fined for stupidity, and I think cyclists/old folk mobility scooters etc should have compulsory TP liability cover.

Us oldies remember the limited moped rules.
Totally killed the new moped sales for a long time.
Just imagine what it will do to the car industry now.
It won't happen yet.
Next is direct TAX as you speed from GPS tracking.

Money makes goverment policies.

Mines the same now that i have changed mine from 225/55/16 to 245/45/17
I regularly drive at 80 though as my car does close to 30mpg when speedo says 80 and about 23 when it says 70

NS Dev - 24/11/08 at 10:19 AM

Why would any sane person want to limit the speed of a car to 70 mph?

That is not a silly question, I actually would like to hear a sensible answer to that question!

I cannot think of 1 single reason

DIY Si - 24/11/08 at 11:29 PM

The only places you can legally do 70 are the places where 99% of the time is perfectly safe to do 80+(weather depending), so why bother with a pointless limiter? The most dangerous speeding is that done in the 30-40 mph limits, where all the pedestrians are. British Gas vans now display a sticker that says limited to 70. Woopee, so you can't overtake on most motorways, but you can still do 70 past the local school. Makes no sense to me at all.
