Been out for a blat
flak monkey - 21/2/09 at 08:25 PM

First nice dry, sunny and warm(ish) drive of the year today Around the coast and cross country roads around Norfolk. Found some more good roads to add to the list too!

Great fun, very quiet on the roads, plenty of bikers around. Now all I need to do is finish tweaking the MS and sort a couple of flat spots.

Fuel economy increased from 20mpg to 25mpg lol Think there is more to be had yet though as it is still running well rich in a few of the cruising ranges. Target is 30mpg once I am done...

Spotted!! Funny enough in a fuel station!

locoR1 - 21/2/09 at 08:45 PM

What a greet day im so jealous! sounds like you put a few miles on it is there a noticeable difference in the way it drives? was it worth the effort?

amazing what a bit of sun does for motivation i took the cover of mine for the first time this year though it was about time i got a few jobs done before it goes back on the road.

YQUSTA - 21/2/09 at 08:50 PM

I went out in mine yesterday when I got home from work. forgot how quick it is

Stuart_B - 21/2/09 at 08:52 PM

Yep been out in mine today, taking advantage of warm(ish) clear blue sky's....

Nothing fancy, just a couple hours driving which I wouldn't even contemplate in the tintop. Pure driving just for the blue sky's...

Took some pics.. heres one!

flak monkey - 21/2/09 at 09:29 PM

Did about 100miles today. More planned for tomorrow.

With regards to how it drives, its not much different to be honest. I did it mainly as a learning excercise in prep for the duratec transplant and forced induction.

I am having a few issues starting from cold at the moment, but tweaked a few things this morning which might help. Think it needs some more fuel!

It might well be better once its all set up though.

i have never really taken mine out for a nice drive on the roads since i finished it (november)

would like to have gone out today but the bl00dy boiler blew up (literally) on friday night so £800 later and a wrecked house i have a cold house, with a nice shiney new boiler on the wall not quite connected up! Hopefully finish it tomorrow ready to be corgi connected up monday/tuesday

Hellfire - 21/2/09 at 11:26 PM

Must admit I was very tempted... but went to Manchester instead! Still too cold...

And funny thing is - you were right about it being a very long drive home............blue skies , dry roads , and a tank of super unleaded
Hoo boy it was a good day for a thrash

mistergrumpy - 22/2/09 at 12:51 AM

Man i can't wait to get my retest in April. I remember renewing my bike insurance and tax this time last year and got about 2 weeks tops out of it before it started chucking it down for another month or so.
I'm going to wait out a bit longer this year.

Meeerrrk - 22/2/09 at 01:38 AM

best day of the year so far and my car is sitting on a trailer with a broken engine

Too cold?! That's what thermal pants were invented for! I've seen minus temps in mine with no heater. Although -4 was a bit much, even for me.

flak monkey - 22/2/09 at 11:03 AM

Been out again this morning, not muc traffic around, and where there was plenty of overtaking oportunities.

MS is getting pretty good now.

dean100yz - 22/2/09 at 07:29 PM

Ive only owned mine a few months so get out on every opportunity

Been out all day today, went out thurs and fri night too

Nice roads and not too cold either. I read people saying this alot but its so true. The smile i have on my face right now - im like a big kid!

omega 24 v6 - 22/2/09 at 07:48 PM

Sounds like your really getting into the setting up of the Squirt now David. What sort of MPG are you getting with the throttle bodies??

flak monkey - 22/2/09 at 08:00 PM

Currently getting about 25mpg more to be had yet though, hoping for about 30mpg when its sorted.

Got a few niggly issues, nothing major though. Mainly a couple of lean spots just off idle, which I think I am going to have to tune out manually. I also dont know what sort of AFR I should get at idle, but anything under about 13 causes issues...

Anything under 13 is surely Rich IIRC???? Unless I'm wrong which may solve a couple of my issues

Meeerrrk - 22/2/09 at 08:11 PM

how come your bothered about MPG in a car like this? if you want good MPG then buy a tdi tintop! lol

Not worried but as the car is lighter then surely you should be able to attain a similar mpg on a blat to the donor vehicle. i'd have thought that for a spirited drive ( not a lunatic flat out one) that 30mpg should be attainable. Given that mines has done 7 or 8 mileas and maybe 20 runs uo to temp in the garage and has used 20 litres then after sva there's still quite a bit of work to be done I HOPE.

flak monkey - 22/2/09 at 08:20 PM

I am not bothered about mpg, i just want it running well. Its not very far out now. If i lean the idle up much more the engine dies under light throttle, leaning out too far.

Theres little point chucking in more fuel than it needs to produce max power, does more harm than good to the engine and my wallet!

I'm finding that under VERY light throttle the engine splutters a bit. I'm looking at putting in more low down tps bins when I finally get round to getting it on the road.

flak monkey - 22/2/09 at 08:37 PM

Thats exactly what i get. I think it might be a side effect of using alpha-n as I cant think of a good way around it without sacrificing a lot of tps bins and compromising other areas.

omega 24 v6 - 22/2/09 at 08:45 PM

From my understanding of it the bigger changes in airflow occur during the fist say 25% of the throttle movement so higher throttle openings would be OK covered by a bigger gap in the tps bins.

I've done my TPS bins as a curve - very small steps at the start , gradually getting larger .
The first third of the graph covers about the first 10% of throttle opening .

omega 24 v6 - 22/2/09 at 08:54 PM

Yip Claire your confirming my thoughts on the matter.
Big learning curve this squirt thing. Very interesting but also very frustrating at times. well it has been for me at least LOL

flak monkey - 22/2/09 at 09:04 PM

This is where I am at the moment. Its not too bad around the cruising areas now, and is getting quite close at WOT too. Obviously needs some smoothing out though.

Do you think my first TPS bins are too far apart?

David

omega 24 v6 - 22/2/09 at 09:18 PM

Looks not to bad IMHO.

If we agreed on the last couple of posts re the light throttle opening then perhaps you'd need to go on the tps scale something like.
59
62
65
68
72
80
90
110
135
160
180
220

I'm just speculating David and no expert by any stretch of the imagination but it may be worth a try. It'd be the same route I'd be doing myself when the time comes. You can always go back to where you are now.
ETA oops it's upside down ( i'm sure you noticed though)

flak monkey - 23/2/09 at 03:56 PM

By playing around it looks like mine splutters before it leaves the first TPS bin on the map and the ADC count only increases by 1 point too.

I'll have another play at the weekend and see how I get on

Check for play between the throttle shaft and the TPS sensor. It sounds as though the throttles are opening without actuating the TPS. This would cause the engine to go lean.

What ignition system are you using? I'm running my MSextra Pinto on the EFI dizzy with an added ignition module (not the TFI unit, that didn't fit in my chassis due to the car being LHD)
