The South Birmingham locosters are looking for the best driving roads in the middle of England or in central Wales. The ideal location would be within a 2 or perhaps 3 hour drive from the South of Birmingham, so as far as the M4 from London to Cardiff, most of central Wales perhaps as far as Aberystwyth. Possibly Lancaster, places south of Leeds plus Lincolnshire or Cambridgeshire.

I'm told North Yorkshire and the west highlands of Scotland Have fine driving roads but they're not really a day trip away.

All good suggestions welcome!

how about the cat and fiddle road and the rest of the roads around buxton/leek/ maccasfield might be a fair drive for you though

I used to drive the Brecon to Swansea road alot and that was a good drive also pass the caves if your after a stopping point.

If you were to head towards Leominster then Brecon then Swansea if you wanted to go that far but stopping at the caves is a good run.

I would say it would take 3 hours to get to swansea and about 2.5 to the caves.

one of my favourites is the A44 from Aberystwyth to Llangurig over the mountains and linking up with the A470. Beautiful winding road, and the first one I'm off to when the car is finished.

I used to go to Rhayader quite a lot back in my biking days - the A44 from Worcester on was always a lot of fun (done it a few times in the Fury and even better )
Then you have the Aberystwyth mountain road through the Elan valley on to Aberystwyth - a bit narrow and bumpy , but not too much `civilization`.

a448 between bromsgrove and kiggy is a nice little one, and the a442 between kiddy & telford

Some nice ideas there. We did the A44 from Worcester to Rhayader last year including the Elan valley. A bit wet but a lot of fun.

Local knowledge is a great thing. Ideally we'd like roads without lots of traffic. There's nothing worse than a nice curly road and doing 35 behind a caravan waiting for a never-coming overtaking opportunity.

Hi, i have got to agree with wyn. that is a great but too short stretch of road. i still have yet to take the car there. this year deffo. and wyn i shall bring the car round sometime soon. have not touched her for months but will be back on the road asap.

Where do I start?
Just make a bee-line for any of these places and the roads that get you there will make you smile.
In no particluar order, you may have to google maps them:
Brynamman to Llangadog (where Topgear do their twisty scenic shoots) 15miles from my house
Llynne Brianne - very scenic & challenging
As mentioned, Llandovery to either Abergavenny or north to Builth Wells,
Builth to Rhayader via the Elan Valley.
Llangadog to Aberaeron
Aberaeron to Fishguard over the Preseli Mountains or up to Aberystwyth on the coastal road.
The list is endless, but a few for you to try.

Spent many a sunny afternoon on these roads in my Striker or huddled behind the screen on my Ducati 748.
Becareful on a Sunday tho, cos all the bikers come down from the Midlands and local plod target the areas
